“The Book of Margery Kempe” is said to have been originally written sometimes in the 15th century in English. It is one of the earliest autobiographies written in English. However, it came to be known only through a book of extracts which was published in the 16th century.
The original 15th century manuscript was found in the collection of an English Catholic family in 1934.
The written manuscript was dedicated to an anonymous priest. The document was the record of the spiritual life of a woman, Margery Kempe of King’s Lynn. She was a very fascinating woman, the daughter of a former mayor of Lynn. She was the wife of John Kempe.
