Beating Emotional Cancer – Creating Extraordinary Outcomes

[Cancer ~ kans

An evil or destructive practice or phenomenon that is hard to contain or eradicate

A malignant growth or tumour resulting from an uncontrolled division of cells:]

Steven Covey described the 5 Metastasizing Emotional Cancers, as being criticizing, complaining, comparing, competing for personal worth and being contentious. These behaviours are the result, the response to stimuli from outside of us. Our reactions to the stimuli bring about these emotional cancers as described by Covey. The most onerous of these reactions is Frustration.

1. How It All Starts

Frustration is probably the most common emotion that is experienced countless times a day by every single human being. Much of the time we are unaware of its effect and it passes unnoticed. However, there is a dark side to frustration, where it eats away at your drive, joy, excitement and sense of fulfilment. In this book, I am going to show you how to identify the things that cause your frustration and show you simple steps to transform frustration from a damaging emotional cancer, into extraordinary outcomes, for you, your colleagues and your life.

It surprised me when I realised that I had spent a large part of my life frustrated. Amazingly, with hindsight, most of the frustration was pointless, as it was based on trivial issues or momentary circumstances. The shocking thing was discovering that even though the circumstances were trivial, the consequences of the frustration were often not.

My first politically motivated boss frustrated me so much that I gave up a career with a great company because of his behaviour. My brother frustrated me so much I did not up my bid to buy him out of the family business and I lost my dream.

My business partner frustrated me so much that my health suffered and I had a heart attack. My frustrations in my marriage got to me so much that I ended up getting divorced.

My light bulb moment came when I ended up at the bottom of a staircase one morning at 4.00am. I had slipped on a dry carpeted top step and landed at the bottom of the staircase with a severely dislocated shoulder. I was forced to stop for a few weeks after the shoulder surgery which gave me time to reflect. I realised just how trivial the first incidents had been for each of my frustrations throughout my life. Each toxic frustration eventually built up and led to some very serious consequences.

My reason for writing this book - for actually putting pen to paper - has developed over many
