Introduction
Do you really want to win scholarship money? Are you looking for college debt solutions?
I ask those questions at the beginning of every seminar and workshop. And, of course, everyone answers, Yes.
That’s why they come, and that’s why you bought this book. The title of this book intrigued you, and, if it is at all possible, you really want to win college scholarships whether it’s for yourself or someone in your family. I am telling you right up front that it is possible for you or a family member to win not just a scholarship but many. I know it. You can believe it, because it’s true. Is it easy? Sometimes, it’s easier than others. If it were easy, everybody would be winning. But, only about one high school senior in thirty makes the real
effort.
You are going to find out, HOW TO DO IT! Most kids will only fill out up to three scholarship applications. You will love to fill out many because you will EXPECT to win.
What does it take to achieve scholarship success? A plan. This book will describe it in detail. If you are in the 8th grade, your chances are outstanding. If you are a junior or senior, ready to fill out scholarship apps, you will learn valuable information that will increase your chances to win ten fold.
And, there are good reasons to win. When’s the last time a college or university announced they were lowering fees? Some have kept them level for a few years, but most keep on raising costs 7 to 10% year after year. Your college financial debt will increase up to $20,000 and more by the time you graduate. Scholarships and grants can reduce or eliminate higher education expenses. Instead of paying up
to $100,000 for a bachelor’s degree, why not pay nothing or almost nothing?
Many years ago, my daughter was getting ready to graduate from high school. My wife and I were told that scholarship money would be awarded on the basis of financial information from the FAFSA that we would need to complete and turn in to the guidance office. My daughter, ranked eighth in her class, received one small award. Our family made too much money. We were scraping and scrimping to get by, but we were told that Mary didn’t qualify based on financial need. What didn’t we know? Later, I discovered that twenty percent of all scholarship and grant money is given based on merit. That means that thousands and thousands of scholarships are available to students regardless of income. But, families need to search for them. It takes research to find most merit scholarships. And most high school guidance departments only offer introductory scholarship aid and seem to endorse sources for loans, loans, and more loans.
Then, I was asked to be a national scholarship judge. Wow! What an incredible experience. The second year, something magical happened.
It was after midnight. Everyone had gone home except the project manager and me. The weather outside was terrible. Snow and ice covered the ground and the wind was blowing in gusts up to thirty miles per hour. I had just spent fourteen hours going over four hundred scholarship applications. Yes, I was tired. There were two stacks in front of me. One was high. It was the reject
pile.
The other was small. Those apps would move on to the next stage of review.
Quite honestly, I had lost the ability to critically evaluate any more forms. I leaned my head back and started to wonder, Why was one stack so large and the other so small? All of the applicants were outstanding students, and yet, only a few would continue in the process. The application for this national award was quite lengthy. Still, I had to keep only the very best.
Suddenly, it hit me like a lightning bolt. All of the test scores, GPAs and activities were about the same, but those kids, moving to the next stage, had simply followed the directions, expressed themselves, and were better organized than most of the losers. Incredible! Could it really be that easy? Yes.
That night I became The Scholarship Doctor™. I planned to research and discover the methods and motivations for succeeding and winning scholarship money. I would develop a plan that could be followed by any college bound student. It would be designed to win many scholarships at the local level and beyond.
It took six years and many revisions before College Scholarship Planning (CSP) was completed.
As you read, you will notice that I refer to the reader as you
, parent
and student.
You’re all part of the same family, so don’t let that shift confuse you. You will also become aware of repeated info. That stresses importance.
You have made an investment in this book. It is a prescription that has the real possibility of curing your college financial ills. Follow the plan, and it will prepare you to win scholarship after scholarship. I know it. Now, it’s your turn to Believe It and Make It Happen!
A Personal Letter To All Families Wanting To Win College Scholarships:
Dear Parents and Students,
Everyone knows that the prices for college educations have been rising continuously during the last two decades. When the federal government made educational loans possible, college boards and
