About this ebook

In The Simple Map, Jen Berthold, a leading expert on grief, loss, and trauma, shares seven steps to getting back on track to living a life filled with joy—a simple map to shifting focus and moving forward towards the life you dream of attaining.
Each day we face a barrage of difficulties, setbacks, and complications. We are led to believe that if we could only own the right things and impress the right people, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us work harder and longer to earn more money and get closer to changing ourselves into the perfect person. The problem is that the goal posts are always moving and there is always something else to be or to buy, and so our joy and happiness is delayed and postponed.
With The Simple Map, Jen engages our hearts, minds, and souls as she identifies how we can take simple action, step by step, day by day, to ensure that we experience joy and happiness right now, and throughout the ups and downs of life.

"The Simple Map is a concise, well researched journey down the path of self aware, self created happiness. Jen’s life experiences as a partner, a mother, a teacher, a friend and a psychologist have formulated a life management strategy that upon cool reflection, can be an integral resource for all people looking to create their own perfect world."

    CHAPTER 1 - FORWARD

The integrated practice of gratitude, clarity of purpose and maintaining a positive outlook can transform every life and it is free of charge to anyone who will take time to truly take care of themselves and to actually do these things. While most people can intellectually understand the benefits of these practices, not everyone actually practices them. The full effects of these practices therefore, do remain relatively unknown or secret to the world at-large. (2007, Bruce, p.187).

The Secret found me at exactly the right moment in my life; newly finished my internship as a psychologist, I was also the heaviest I had ever been at 85 kg, lethargic, unmotivated, and very unfit. After my husband signed up for a mentorship program with an Australian property investment guru, Michael Yardney, I decided I should get our money's worth by reading some of the material he was sending us. Soon I was thirsting for more inspirational reading and moved on to a book recommended by Michael, Bob Proctor's You Were Born Rich. I then sought more similar reading material and worked my way through a shelf full of books with a similar call number at the local library, eventually hitting Rhonda Byrne's The Secret and continuing on to read works by most of the contributors to The Secret.

Interestingly, for every person publicly attesting to the effectiveness of these approaches, there seemed to be a sceptic somewhere attesting to the complete opposite, be they on the internet, in their own book, or my colleagues and neighbours who had read some of these books and experienced no success as a result.

As I read these books I noticed two things: Firstly, as Rhonda Byrne points out in The Secret, numerous authors over the years have attempted to impart the same insights with a variety of different terminology and contexts. Secondly, the insights being imparted seemed to closely resonate with the current psychological research findings in the fields of optimism, resilience and solution focussed therapies.

In response I began to methodically change my life using the motivation I derived from popular psychology, bolstered with the tested and proven methods I had studied during my training to become a psychologist. By teasing out the often cryptic messages in the popular psychology books, and fleshing them out with my knowledge of sound, scientifically tested, psychological best practise techniques and therapies, I have experienced a huge uplifting of spirit; energy levels, fitness, and general approach to life.

The following is my interpretation of the anecdotally supported popular psychology around The Secret/The Law of Attraction from many varied authors, overlayed with sound, scientifically tested, psychological best practise techniques and therapies. It is my hope that this combination will empower many more people to make positive changes in their lives across all contexts.

Both sections of this book are broken into chapters which each centre around a practice. Each of these practices should become a routine part of your life if you are going to achieve success and happiness. These habits are presented in the order which I acquired them; however they can probably be read and acquired in a variety of ways. The first section of the book is somewhat an autobiography, filled with anecdotes of how these practices have become an integral part of my life. The second section of the book is intended to be used as a reference; a handbook for life; a simple map to help you access the treasure available in your life.

SECTION 1 - DISCOVERING THE MAP

CHAPTER 2 - LIVING THE SECRET

My eyes open with bubbling anticipation, ready to greet the new day ahead. Rolling over, I notice that the alarm clock is seconds from breaking into raucous melodies. I turn it off, bounce out of bed and exit the bedroom as quietly as possible, in an effort to let my husband continue with his slumber uninterrupted. Grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, I enter the rumpus room to the sound of bird song greeting the breaking dawn. Opening the blinds I see the mist rolling back across my suburban lawn. So many things to be grateful for and the day has barely begun.

Limbering up with my 30 minute yoga routine, I wonder how my friend is going with the yoga DVD I gave her. Since I began doing this yoga routine 5 months ago, I have found I no longer need the DVD to remember the exercises, so I passed the DVD on to her. After the yoga, I hop onto the cross-trainer and spend 20 minutes chasing the portrait of my three beautiful children. It is the thought of playing with them which keeps me rising from bed each morning; hula-hooping, cart-wheeling, playing football, bike riding; these are the things I dream of doing on a daily basis.

At the crowing of the rooster, my husband's alarm on his mobile phone, the children begin to straggle into the rumpus room rubbing their sleepy eyes. Jumping off the cross-trainer I tousle some hair, pick up a hug, and kiss a button nose. So many things to be grateful for and I'm barely an hour into the day.

On the way to the bathroom I pass my husband exiting the bedroom. We stop for a lingering hug and kiss in the doorway. Half way through my morning toiletries my two beautiful daughters appear in the mirror behind me, hair brushes and elastics in hand. Pausing in my own preening, I enjoy the task of brushing and styling each one's hair. As they thank me and run off to continue getting ready for school, I realise that I am unbelievably
