I. Introduction: TCP/IP Networking

TCP/IP is short for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, the suite of communications protocols used to connect the hosts on the Internet. TCP/IP uses several protocols, the two main ones being TCP and IP. TCP/IP is built into the UNIX operating system and is used by the Internet, making it the de facto standard for transmitting data over networks. TCP handles packet flow between systems and IP handles the routing of packets.

All modern networks are now designed using a layered approach. Each layer presents a predefined interface to the layer above it. By doing so, a modular design can be developed so as to minimize problems in the development of new applications or in adding new interfaces.
