About this ebook

First of four books in The Mentor Series.

Book 1 examines more than 90 subjects in alphabetical order with treatment ranging from single paragraph to extensive coverage. Intended for use by mentors and protégés, the author has interwoven quizzes, checklists, case studies, histories, myths uncovered, research, guidelines, models, Action Plans, how-tos and a Bonus piece on skills coaching.

The overall aim of the book is to help you make sense of piecing together an individual plan when it's too easy to say: "I don't have the time." or "I don't know where to start." or "What if I fail?"

The author is no newcomer to the vast and challenging subject of mentoring, rightly called: "the most complex of human interactions". With this challenge in mind, relying on her wide experience in the field, the author has set out to help make sense of the many issues individuals face when they decide to be intentional about collaboration – before they work together, as they work together and as they move along to work with others.

Whether the partners are very new to the ideas of quality mentoring or experienced does not matter as the author has fashioned a book to meet all these needs in a way that makes fascinating reading start to finish.

Marilynne Miles Gray includes material from her mentoring professional practice about issues that often lie beneath the surface of the relationship and that can be barriers to otherwise productive and effective interactions whether these are in colleges, corporations, government agencies or non-profits.

The author has made certain her experiences with mentoring in various countries around the world have flavored the collection and added additional valuable insights that might otherwise be overlooked, discounted or downplayed. Read this book to make sure success is attainable.

Future books in The Mentor Series cover the topic with different slants using a different organization whether it is a series of case studies (Book 2), secrets of mentoring (Book 3) or a Leadership Handbook (Book 4).

How did I land in the field of mentoring? Long story short: with over 15 years of teaching experience behind me (ranging from high school to university levels), I collected another 8 years of mentoring program experience. It seemed reasonable at that point to partner with my husband to start a company specializing in the design of mentoring materials and formal programs. This work has taken me to Borneo, Germany, Mexico, Australia, the USA and Canada where I've met some wonderful people. I hold two degrees from the University of British Columbia -- an M.A. in English and an M.Ed. in Administration, Permanent teaching Certificates in Ontario, and B.C. along with a doctoral-level Curriculum Design courses from the University of Toronto (OISE).
