    INTRODUCTION

Have you gone on a long trip where you have gotten bored while traveling or waiting in an airport or bus or train station? Do you need a quick pick up to help in your job search? Have you wondered how to pass the time and amuse yourself, when you can’t use your cell phone, laptop, or read, or listen to music?

Well, this little book -- THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU ARE ON A LONG TRIP, WAITING AROUND, OR JUST PLAIN BORED – is the perfect antidote. It features a variety of fun and creative things you can do in your imagination or by being more perceptive, speaking, or interacting with others. Activities range from interesting things to think about and imagine to mind games to enjoy with yourself and others, and more.

I got the idea for this book while commuting back and forth between Oakland and L.A., since I own a house in Oakland and for two years had an office/apartment in Santa Monica to help me break into the film industry, while also pursuing a career writing books, speaking, and consulting on work relationships. From August 2007 to August 2009, I spent 2-3 weeks a month in each place and drove for about seven hours each way.

While I started out listening to the radio and occasional tapes, I sometimes found myself getting bored and restless. Using a cell phone to have a conversation was distracting and is now illegal unless you use a headphone or Bluetooth.

Thus, as I drove, I began thinking of things to do to make the time go faster and came up with all kinds of ideas. As a result, instead of a slog, these trips turned out to be both relaxing and stimulating excursions which I looked forward to. The long drive became like another vacation trip.

As I tried out different ways of staying alert and amusing myself, I began to write these ideas down or say them aloud into a cassette-recorder. The result was hundreds of different activities that range from building your brain power, charging up your memory, and thinking of how to be more successful at work to just having fun. You can even play mental games and safely
