E. Don Harpe

Award winning author E. DON HARPE has had a varied career, from military service in the 60’s to years spent as a published songwriter in Nashville. During this time he won the coveted Silver Pen Award from the Nashville Banner newspaper. Since retiring from public work in 2004, Harpe has concentrated on writing novels, and continuing to move forward with his writing. He also has nearly 40 short stories available which can be found on Smashwords as well as other sites that feature ebooks. His book of memoirs, THE LAST OF THE SOUTH TOWN RINKY DINKS, published in September of 2008, was an instant success with friends and readers alike. The stories are touching, down to earth tales of small town America, and will bring tears and laughter to all who can remember when the world was a kinder, simpler place. It’s one of those books that you won’t be able to put down, and one that you will re-read many times over the years. Now living in Georgia, Harpe devotes his time to Helen, his wife of nearly 50 years, to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and to his writing. “I’m pretty satisfied in my own skin right now,” Harpe says, “and I just want to continue to write things that will entertain and hold the readers interest.”

    FEATURING

    1. THE DEMON REGISTRATION ACT OF 2024

In the beginning, the humans called the elders 'Demons,' the Demons called the humans 'Food', and for the most part the relationship was about what one would expect. Over the generations, with a slight amount of give and take from both sides, it could be noted that both connotations have proven to be very nearly correct. The Demon Registration Act of 2024 was an attempt by the Humans to put into place and enforce some much needed regulations on the Elders, and for the past 94 years it has held both sides in check. Now, in 2117, with the Elders having faded away until they are mostly the stuff of fairy tales and nightmares, the DRA allows the Demons to live in the human world, where they still provide their much-needed services.

    2. ANGEL IN AMBER

For years he was silent and unmoving, encased in a four-inch block of clear crystal, paying no attention to the events that unfolded in front of his eyes, or the people who took part in those events. That changed this afternoon, when Maggie Madison walked into the store. For the first time in eons, he sent a hesitant thought to a mortal, Take me, he whispered.

    3. WHAT GOES AROUND

Michael Wilson finds a hundred year old tear-stained photograph in a trunk in the attic, and it soon takes him outside his comfort zone and drops him squarely in the middle of the unknown. Familiar, everyday things turn into objects of unreasoning terror, and Michael finds he is no longer secure in his belief that the supernatural doesn’t exist, or that what he doesn’t know can’t hurt him.

    4. THE SKY IS FALLING

There were hundreds of the objects, falling all about, drifting on the morning breeze and glittering in the sunlight like diamonds. At first Nancy thought they were all of the same blue color, but then she noticed several with wisps of white scattered about on them. She took a few steps sideways and caught one of these pieces. She wanted to get a better look. She was surprised to see the white substance looked as if it were moving on the surface of the material. As she watched, it slid away to one side and vanished from the surface completely.

THE DEMON REGISTRATION ACT OF 2024

I WAS VERY YOUNG WHEN I FIRST came here, and I recall the great grandfather of a friend of mine telling me he actually attended the session of congress the day the Demon Registration Act was passed, way back in 2024. Now, as I approach middle age, hardly anyone is still alive that was actually around back then. The DRA, as it is called, was written in an effort to control the migration into the human world of those strange beings called the Elders, and for the most part it has succeeded. The Elders came from a different plane of existence and were actually here far before humans, but there were never sufficient numbers of them to hold off the encroachment of man and his structured society, and so the humans took over, as they are prone to do.

It wasn’t long before the humans decided they needed to limit the number of Elders that were allowed ingress into this world, and so the DRA was passed. In the days immediately following the passing of the Act, many of the Elders were hunted down and killed. Since that time, most of the rest went to ground. They became the stuff of human nightmares, manifesting themselves in dreams and nightmares. Most of the memories of them have been driven into the deepest recesses of the human mind, and for the most part they remain out of sight, and therefore, out of mind. Of course, this is not a hard and fast rule, by any means, for the Elders are still very present in the minds of the very old, the very young, and the insane. And the DRA is still very much a fact of life.

The relationship between the two races is an extraordinary and wonderful thing, and well worth the time it takes to examine it.

The Elders once lived among humans as equals, or as near equals as either side could accept, given the dramatic differences between the two races. Make no mistake, those differences were quite dramatic.

The Demons counted among their numbers vampires, goblins, ghosts, various changelings, werewolves, and the occasional gargoyle or two. These so called demons had their own lifestyle, of course, which was quite unlike that of humankind, and while many humans could not abide that way of life, there were certain things the two races did for each other that were beneficial to both sides. For that reason, for many years there existed a kind of unsettled understanding between the two races.

However, after a thousand years or so of this somewhat peaceful co-existing, the humans became worried that the number of Elders were becoming too many. More crossed from the demon world into the human world with each passing year, and the humans began to think once the Elders were here in sufficient numbers they might try for a total takeover of the human plane of existence.

It would be correct to say it was about that time the violence began to escalate. The humans began a slow and methodical eradication of the Elders, and in retaliation the Elders claimed more and more human victims.

It was a situation that was doomed to fail, and unless they could find a compromise both sides could live with, then one side or the other would surely be exterminated completely.

Some on both sides, humans and Elders alike, became obsessed with destroying everything pertaining to the other side and it became increasingly more difficult for them to be able to live together in any kind of accord.

On the other hand, others of both sides desperately sought a solution, holding secret meetings and conferences, and finally, in 2024, the Demon Registration Act (DRA) was passed by the human congress. The DRA required all demons to register as to what sort of demon they actually were, when or about when they came to the human plane, where they intended to live, and what they intended to do while here. It also limited the number of demons that could legally cross from one world to the other, and provided for very strict punishment for those that came here illegally. The law gave the humans the authority to capture, detain, or perhaps even kill any illegal demons they found lurking about. The Act defined an illegal demon as one who failed to register and did not have upon his or her person at all times a document known as the National Demon Identification Card. Called by most simply The Red Card, the card was soon being counterfeited and sold to any demon who could come up with the very expensive asking price.

Soon there were human demon hunters in every neighborhood. They walked the streets, paying close attention to school zones, closed down crematoriums, and dark back alleys. They searched out the illegal demons, capturing or killing them almost at will, and if a legally registered
