    INTRODUCTION

    ***** *****

Thank you for purchasing BEACH VOLLEYBALL- SECRET OF THE PROS. You have just made a decision that will elevate your game whether you are a beginner or you are playing competitively; even professionally. In this book you will be introduced to the basics of Beach Volleyball from the eyes of the pros. I have written this book because I have had plenty of experiences, both physically and mentally, throughout my career in which I learned things the hard way. I want to give the reader a short cut to mastering the game of Beach Volleyball using my history on the AVP Tour, the matches it took me to get to this level, and my knowledge of all the different sports I excelled in.

I stand at 5’ 8 1/4 and have competed on a world class level and trained with the greatest volleyball player ever to play the game, Karch Kiraly. I grew up in the environment of Laguna Beach, California with the likes of Adam Johnson, Leif Hanson, Scott Fortune, The Dvorak brothers (Drake and Rudy), Dane Blanton, Mike Stafford, George Carey and more. I spent my college years in San Diego were I played against Mike Whitmarsh, Ricky Luties, Al Janc, Pat Powers, Jim Nichols and the infamous Sato brothers (Eric, Scott and Gary) of which, Scott nicknamed me Freshy".

Throughout my grueling experiences of putting my time in at the beach, getting my butt kicked by Liz Masakayan on a woman’s net, searching for skin cancer, and scrapping up partners to get a game because they thought I was so small that I couldn’t play, I encountered many experiences that would elevate my game to a level that would eventually pay off in great victories against players like Wes Welch, Andrew Smith, Steve Timmons, Rob Heiger, Al Janc, and Brent Frohoff while playing very competitively with other top ten players on the tour at that time.

I don’t want to name drop any more, but I do want you to know that if you have never heard of me, (like these great players have) I have consistently put the fear of God into them although I stand a foot shorter than most of them.

It is tough to play a tall man’s sport, so I thought I would try to break the game down the way I see it in my mind, politics aside (although I may take some cheap shots at some of my former adversaries). If you are taller than me, and learn my strategies and techniques, you will elevate your game and possibly become one of the greatest players there are.

What I am trying to show the reader in this book are the lessons I have learned throughout my years of experience in an easy, fun entertaining way that will help you on the court. I will hopefully teach you how to win more games, and hopefully make you more competitive in the sport of Beach Volleyball; and other sports in general for that matter. You will do this by learning basic skills, advanced defensive strategies you may have never thought of, offensive strategies, and most importantly, advanced mental aspects of the game that will turn you into the player that people want to root for, believe in, and even take home to meet their parents.

I hope you get information out of this book that will make you successful in the sport, and I hope you will understand that these tips are TOP SECRET. It is a compilation of information that I have tested and executed in order to become successful. Blessed with a little more height, I could have been an All-Star. I was actually the Florida State Champion back in the early 1990’s. Aren’t you impressed now?

Enough chit-chat, please read on and enjoy…

ADVANTAGES OF BEACH VOLLEYBALL VS. INDOOR VOLLEYBALL

Beach Volleyball is the real sport, much better than indoor volleyball. It is so addicting and for good reason. The following is a list of reasons why one needs to play beach volleyball rather than just indoor:

You learn every aspect of the game in beach volleyball, instead of specializing in just one position. In beach volleyball the player needs to learn how to bump, set, pass, hit, block, dig, serve, and apply the mental strategy to succeed whereas in indoor volleyball a player may just pass, may just hit and block, may just set, and may not even have to serve during the entirety of the game. In indoor volleyball, the player may be a substitute, hoping to get in the game and therefore being crushed mentally if he or she does not.

You get to touch the ball much more frequently, almost every time the ball is on your side of the net. You move over greater areas, getting more exercise, and gaining more strength.

Being able to jump out of the sand and perform will greatly increase your jump if you choose to go into the gym. Beach volleyball is good for basketball jumping as well. I am 5’ 8" and used to be able to slam dunk a volleyball indoor on a 10 foot basket because of developing my jump in the sand.

The mental aspect of the game is heightened and strategy is executed on a larger scale. Once
