In Mandarin Chinese The Right Way! 888 Essential Chinese Words, you will learn 888 of the most useful words that are needed to begin speaking, reading and writing Mandarin Chinese so that you can become an advanced learner of the language.

Learning these carefully chosen words will give you a solid foundation of words for you to really understand how to make any sentence. These essential words are commonly used every day in China. Once you know these words, you will quickly be able to read, write and converse in Mandarin Chinese.

The 888 essential words in this book have been chosen to help you be ready for using Mandarin Chinese in a communicative way through speaking or writing. They also have been chosen for you so that you may begin reading Chinese characters in books and newspapers.

    How to use this book

If you are learning from Basic Mandarin Chinese For Beginners! Your First Mandarin Book or any of the Mandarin Chinese The Right Way! eBooks, then you already have a strong understanding of how to make sentences correctly. Therefore, you can immediately jump right in and start learning these essential words!

Try to make sentences with words you already know combined with the essential words in this book. Begin with short sentences and don’t try to make your sentences too complex. Everyday Mandarin Chinese is spoken like this anyway. Sentences are usually short, concise and to the point and instead of making an elaborate and informative single sentence, it is separated into several sentences to convey the same point.

    Learn to type characters

An excellent way of learning how to read Chinese quickly and efficiently without the laborious task of having to write out each character is to use your computer.

The computer allows you to use Pinyin to type words and gives you a list of choices of which word you would like to use. This is not only convenient, but also challenges you to identify each word individually. This will help your reading skills develop at a very quick rate.

Type the sentences that are provided in this book into Microsoft Word using the Chinese (Simplified, PRC). When opening up Chinese in your Language Settings, choose Chinese Simplified Microsoft Pinyin ABC Input Style. I find this one the easiest to use and the Pinyin is very accurate.

    Pronunciation

Before you start, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the tones and sounds that are used in Mandarin Chinese. Use the two Pinyin tables and the Mandarin Tones table provided to help you and the back of this book.

Once you have a basic understanding of the sounds and how to read them in Pinyin, you are ready to begin learning. Pinyin is actually easy to learn and you’ll get used to it when you start reading.

Practice saying them often and say the tones slowly. Don’t slur your words. In English, sometimes we add words together when we say complete sentences.

This is not the case in Chinese. Each Chinese word is spoken separately. Be aware of this when learning to speak Mandarin Chinese. You don’t want to develop a bad habit.
