About the Author
Chapter 1: Spring Is In the Air
Jack Holliday dug his hands into a pile of brown, crunchy leaves, scooped them up and dropped them into the black garbage can sitting beside him in the grass. It took several more handfuls before he cleared out the area underneath the rose bush in front of him. Jack noticed several small green shoots growing out of the old deadened branches. The ends were slightly red as if colored by the sun. The air felt warm, and he actually started to break a sweat as he worked.
This one’s done!
he called out to his mother. She was tending to some tulips in the
garden by the front porch.
Did you get all the old leaves cleaned out?
she called back.
Yeah, and the new roses are already starting to grow!
Let’s give them a little food to help them along,
she said, walking over with a bag in one hand and a scoop in the other.
What do roses eat?
Jack asked.
We just sprinkle a little of this around them in the dirt,
his mother said. It’s full of vitamins and minerals that help the plants grow.
Just like people need vitamins too,
Jack said.
That’s right. And water and sunlight. It’s really pretty easy.
I can’t believe the tulips and those yellow flowers are already blooming,
Jack said.
The yellow flowers are called daffodils,
his mother said. Daffodils and tulips are always the first flowers to come up in the spring. Usually right around Easter, which is next Sunday.
Jack hadn’t realized Easter was so soon. He always liked that holiday. It was fun to dye eggs, put out an Easter basket and hunt for eggs on Easter morning. Not to mention the candy the Easter Bunny left for them.
Where did Peter go?
Jack’s mother asked. I thought he was helping you with the leaves.
He did for about two minutes then he ran to get his toy lawn mower so he could help Dad with the lawn.
Peter was Jack’s four-year-old little brother. Jack used to love pretending to mow the lawn when he was four as well. Whenever his father stopped to empty the grass bag Jack acted like he was emptying the grass clippings into the garbage can. Now he got to do real jobs to help his father with the lawn. Jack would walk around making sure the gutter downspouts were out of the way. And when his father was finished, he’d let Jack walk the mower back into the garage and park it. Jack couldn’t wait for the day when he was old enough to actually mow the lawn himself.
Jack’s mother gave him the plant food and scoop and showed him how to sprinkle it around each rose bush. Just as he finished, Peter and
