About this ebook

Everyone has that one friend; the mother of the group. Maria is that one friend; nurturing, wise, and with a spicy streak, Maria is the matriarch of the clan. Cerebral, emotional, and even sometimes comical, Maria’s story is the seventh in the Loving Her series. The Writer tells the story of Maria through grief, and joy, love and fear, and an emotionally challenging family relationship that threatens to interfere with the love she'd given up ever finding again... with Stephania.

    Series Dedication

I dedicate this entire group of stories to the loving memory of my grandfather. My hero, my rock, my greatest fan. He always encouraged and supported my writing. It is because of him that you are reading these and I wrote them. Thank you will never be enough. Rest in peace, RPK. You are greatly loved and missed.

    Book Dedication

To a good friend and a great writer, Chelle. A woman who has believed in me, taught and inspired me, and who has done more for me than she will ever fully realize. Thank you for being such a great blessing in my life!

    The Writer

As Maria drove into the city, she looked up at the sky. She was taken aback by its darkness. It was that color. That shade of blue-black that was undeniable. That kind of ominous looking sky. A sky that encased something colossal. It was the color of a dark, heavy storm that’s just waiting to dump gallons of water onto the city in a swift and harsh blitz. The color reminded her of her childhood days in Puerto Rico. Days when the sky would suddenly change from a bright, happy, baby blue to this dark, angry ebony, silently presaging a coming hurricane.

Maria sat nervously in the chair. She hadn’t had to do anything like this in decades. Did she have what it takes? Would she succeed, or would her nerves get the best of her?

The young girl who sat her reappeared. Come this way. She motioned for Maria to follow her.

Taking in a deep breath, Maria rose and began to follow her through a maze of cubicles until they reached his office.

Here she is. The girl turned to Maria. Miss Lopez, here is Mister Torrez. She turned towards the middle aged gentleman. Mister Torrez, this is Maria Lopez. She quietly walked away while they shook hands.

Please come in, he said. Have a seat.

Emmanuel Torrez was a handsome man. Short and slight of build, but he was attractive nonetheless. He had dark, dark olive skin. His eyes were a rich chocolate color. He had strong, high cheek bones and thick, full lips. His smile was warm and welcoming.

Tell me about yourself, Maria. He said. What can you bring to El Sol?

I can bring myself. I have a unique voice and perspective. I also bring age and experience. And I bring my love of language.

    A love of language?

Yes. Language – words – are my passion.

    How so?

Well, I am fluent in Spanish, English, German…

German? That’s an odd language. Why German?

    Pourquoi pas? Maria retorted.

    His eyes narrowed.

    French as well, she smirked.

So, you love languages and you love words. What is it about words that you love so much?

Languages are more than just words. And words are not inanimate objects. They are the way we communicate and much more.

She stopped for a moment. Words are what we use to woo lovers, to honor our loved ones and to shun our enemies. They are how we express ourselves as individuals and as cultures. They are how we identify the people and world around us. They are how we tell stories and sing songs. Words are alive, full of history and also so very much in the moment. Words cannot be undone. There is not one facet of history – not one facet of life – that is not based on words.

Okay, fair enough. He paused. Tell me how being multi-lingual has helped you…in any aspect of your life.

It opens your eyes. You suddenly see people and cultures in very different lights. You begin to understand people better. You can see the evolution of different countries and nations. People are no longer classified by their races. At least not to me. I think it has given me a much greater appreciation of different countries, cultures and people. It has given me the ability to turn strangers into friends, regardless of where they came from.

He leaned forward and said, "Okay then. Going on a theme of cultures and races, we are…a minority. Not necessarily by numbers, but certainly by how we are treated. How we are perceived by the media and the world around us. People have expectations and assumptions about us. There are also many stereotypes about our people. And yet, our people don’t necessarily fall into those categories or stereotypes. What do
