START YOUR POMERANIAN OUT ON THE RIGHT PAW

The Pomeranian is considered a toy dog by the kennel club. The role of a toy dog is to provide companionship to his human family. A well behaved, friendly, cheerful little Pomeranian is a pleasure to own and will provide you and your family with many hours of happiness.

The purpose of this book is to instruct the Pomeranian puppy owner on how to quickly and easily train their Pomeranian by avoiding the majority of common training mistakes.

START YOUR POMERANIAN OUT ON THE RIGHT LAW

For the purposes of training a Pomeranian, the owner must begin, from day one, to teach the Pomeranian puppy acceptable behaviour.

Pomeranian puppies at 8 weeks of age are tiny. Too much handling and excitement can cause disruption in sleeping and eating habits. Stress can also bring on hypoglycaemia (extremely low blood sugar), which can be common in very stressful situations for toy dog breed puppies. One of the first lessons is to establish a schedule and stick to it as closely as possible to keep stress to a minimum.

Many new Pomeranian owners make the mistake of placing their new puppy in a room and closing the door to prevent the puppy from making mistakes throughout the house. While the puppy needs to learn, isolation from the family will make it very difficult for the puppy to properly socialise and become part of the family. A puppy playpen or a small room with a tiled floor and an expandable baby gate is preferable. The puppy will be able to see members of the family while learning his boundaries.

Pomeranians are very intelligent. Your puppy may be scared the first night away from his littermates and mother, but he’ll be very aware of how his new family reacts to whimpers and cries. Although Puppy may whimper and cry, he should not be allowed to sleep in a bed with his human family. Make absolutely sure the puppy does not need to potty and that he’s not hungry or thirsty. Once this is established, a soft toy, a windup alarm clock wrapped in a sock, a soft playing radio, or some other distraction to help the puppy not feel alone should be placed close by and the owners should leave the room. Another very popular toy that helps a new puppy feel more at ease is one of the battery operated puppies that make breathing noises or have an internal heartbeat sound that the new puppy can cuddle with.

A reputable Pomeranian breeder will keep a puppy with its mother and littermates until the puppy is at least eight weeks old. The mother has many lessons for her new litter, and early removal can cause behavioural problems in the future. The mother will discipline the litter and the littermates will establish a dominance order. These are very valuable lessons the puppy will need to know when he becomes a member of his new human family.

A Pomeranian will bond with his human owner as a replacement for his mother. Puppies will also seek playmates to replace the bond they had with their littermates. If the puppy is being brought into a one-person home, the new owner should be aware they have two hats to wear and help the puppy adjust to serious time and play time. If the puppy is being brought into a family home, the alpha parent should be firm, consistent and loving, and the children
