Preface – What is this book really about?

Why is soccer the #1 sport in the rest of the world?

Isn’t it really expensive to get a good ball?

Hey, do you want to play a pickup game right here, right now?

Old men and girls can play? How many on a team?

Why the USA needs soccer to succeed here.

I’d get off the couch, but I’m too fat.

Trying to NOT hurt the opponent is a sport?

Even if there were jobs, he wouldn’t get one.

Where will I ever use discipline, teamwork and dynamic awareness?

Why now? What makes it soccer’s moment right now?

    Funny, I don’t remember getting a concussion.

The NCAA, the tax code and labor unions.

It’s a small world – and getting smaller.

As American as baseball soccer, hotdogs, and apple pie.

Glory Days – did I tell you about the time . . .?

Follow my team on our YouTube channel.

How soccer (the game) needs to adapt to become our game.

How dare you trample on tradition?

    Did you see that move?

Don’t flop the baby out with the bathwater.

What’s the score? The statistician needs numbers.

    Is this game almost over?

The show business of the successful game.

Friend me to get my stats.

Supercross will never amount to anything.

    Talking heads and OJ Simpson.

Did you fill in your tournament bracket?

    The Kentucky Derby.

    Fantasy land and the draft.

    We’ll get em next year.

Elements of the business plan for soccer success.

Adopted as quickly as the metric system.

Calendar is more important than anything else.

    Why should I play?

Why should I be a fan?

    How do sponsors win?

    The budget is always wrong.

Targets, Milestones steps - the checklist

Conclusion - I can’t wait to say Hey I had that same idea.

Preface – What is this book really about?

As an observer, I hope you will see huge value in adult, amateur soccer for the USA. Certain things are happening that will increase the opportunity for soccer to take off. I also hope you will see some changes that need to be made in soccer itself for it to work. I tried to drop what I have into a readable format. It is not a business plan. It is food for thought and hopefully discussion. Even if you don’t agree with my points in the book, I hope you enjoy the read and the book itself. I would bet any two sports fans could enjoy hours discussing any one of many points I raise here.

First, I wrote up a business plan for a US soccer league. Then, I realized that it would be better as a narrative book. It is more about the principles than the cash flow. I wrote the initial draft of the book as though I was an objective observer with no bias. It felt disingenuous. If I pretend to be a mere historian documenting religion, you will feel violated when I lean your head back into the baptismal water.

Starting out with a bit of why this is so important made more sense. So let me state my bias clearly. The United States of America needs soccer to be able to lead and compete with the rest of the future world. We won’t let the Chinese or others lead. We will be the good example and lead country of that future world . . . . Too subtle?

Regarding bibliographic references, I’d like to quote 19th century British author, James Allen, Circumstances don’t make the man. They reveal him. Turns out, James was quoting someone else who was quoting someone else. The earliest reference I can find to the quote is from 1st century Turkish philosopher Epictetus. Epictetus probably overheard it in the proverbial Turkish bath. If I quote someone who copied someone else, I’m sorry. Send me an email and I’ll fix it in future publications.

Rather than a bibliography, I suggest you use my bibliographic research tool: Wikipedia. If it is on Wikipedia, I won’t credit beyond suggesting you look there to verify my facts.

Let’s get back to Epictetus and circumstances. Sometimes, the right circumstances can send you in a specific direction on outputs. Right or wrong, you are predisposed to go a particular direction.

Urban legend is that Pierre Omidyar's girlfriend needed a way to buy and sell Pez dispensers for her collection. Pierre was a computer programmer. E Bay was born. Flexibility didn’t hurt. The first thing they sold was a broken laser pointer. The buyer knew it didn’t work. Sometimes you shouldn’t ask why business models work. Just keep adapting the business plan to get things to work for your customer. We don’t study or know of all the great programs that Pierre wrote and no one used. We just know EBay.

    Steve Jobs is discussed
