The World's Most Eaten Table Fish: How to Catch it and How to Cook it
()
About this ebook
Carp are among the most abundant fish on the planet. Luckily for us they are also one of the most palatable. People from the English-speaking world would generally be surprised to discover that carp are the world's most beloved and eaten table fish, in many places more sought after than any other. An abundant species of fish that are not generally eaten is a problem when there are also so many people out there, even in rich countries, that cannot get enough good food to eat.
There are thus two reasons to eat carp. Firstly, they are a source of food for people who might not have enough to eat. Secondly, eating them will help to control their numbers when in many places they are present in sufficient numbers to become a pest.
n
This book outlines the reasons for fishing for carp, the gear and bait needed and simple rigs to help you catch your carp. After that cleaning, preparing and filleting the fish is covered and then finally some recipes and cooking hints to help you cook and enjoy your fish.

Introduction
The fish, nearly sixty centimetres of it, lay flapping on the river bank until I mercifully performed a coup-de-grace with my priest, a small metal club kept especially for that purpose. When it had expired I began the unpleasant but necessary task of cleaning the animal, a bloody job and one that inevitably leads to scales turning up in random inaccessible places on my person and in my hair.
As I was opening the gut to remove the entrails a shadow was cast over the fish from behind my right shoulder. I heard a weasely, nasal voice behind me exclaim you can't eat that!
I didn't even turn around before replying with the obvious, sardonic question when was the last time that you tried
? I didn't wait for the answer, I knew it would be the same as the last twenty or so men with whom I have had the same conversation. I've never eaten it!
The fish in question was a carp.
Yes, carp is the world's most eaten table fish.
I believe people should be eating more carp, not just because they are delicious but also because they are very sustainable, existing in vast numbers. In many places they breed so quickly and easily that they become a pest-species and catching them to eat is an act of environmental salvage. There are many pests in the world, I wish they were all as tasty and easy to catch as carp.
This book is an attempt to reduce carp numbers by encouraging people to catch and eat them. Also always present in my mind while writing is that catching carp to eat them would also help the hungry, the destitute. Everyone wins if everyone eats more carp.
If you are an angler, a recreational fisherwoman or fisherman I hope this book encourages you to catch and eat carp. However, the sections on fishing will be a bit simple for an experienced angler, the rest of it is definitely worth reading. I hope someone who has never fished before will be able to obtain enough information from this book to go out there and fish for carp. If you need more detail on anything there are hundreds, even thousands of books and websites out there dedicated to fishing, you can easily discover what you need. You could also ask someone for help, at the riverside
