About this ebook

The true story of Barry, one of the first Navy SEAL combat canines. He completed over 225 missions with Special Warfare Group Two and was credited for detecting 125 pounds of homemade explosives, 75 feet of detonation cord, 50 blasting caps, and two hand grenades. It was the largest explosive find, and for his skills Barry was awarded the Joint Commendation Medal with Valor. This was one of three medals he received for his service during missions. This book details some special stories about his training, bravery, and dedication to the Navy SEALs, as told to me by his SEAL handler and teammate, Mitchell Myers.

Author

Joanne Robertson-Eletto

I’m a retired literacy professor from St. John’s University, and still teach part-time for the Graduate School of Education. I have loved dogs all of my life, and happily shared my home with all shapes, sizes, breeds, and temperaments. My work with students has shown me that young readers are also drawn to dogs, and that they like reading about them. In fact, young readers prefer nonfiction books. Therefore, to capitalize on both of their interests, and to assist them to understand self-sacrifice, patriotism, and devotion to country, I wrote “Barry’s Story” to bring these concepts to life.

This is a true story of Barry, one of the first Navy SEAL working dogs. I learned about him during a visit to the SEAL Museum in Florida. As I reviewed his showcase, I saw photos displaying what Barry experienced during his three years of service in the Multi-Purpose Canine (MPC) Program of the Navy SEALs. I discovered that Barry and his handler were deployed
