Robert Brenner is an engineer, consultant, college professor, historical genealogist, and professional speaker with extensive experience in research and information publishing. A retired naval officer with distinguished service in both nuclear submarines and microelectronic research and development, he holds a bachelor's degree (BSEE) and two master's degrees (MSEE, MSSM). He was recognized a Very High Speed Integrated Circuit (VHSIC) microelectronics pioneer by the DOD and served four years in R&D at TRW after a 23-year Navy career.He is the author of 56 books including Going Solar: a Homeowner’s Experience, Power Up! The Smart Guide to Home Solar Power: How to Make a Wise Solar Investment, How to Construct (and Use) the 45W Harbor Freight Solar Kit, Supernatural & Strange Happenings in the Bible, and Supernatural & Strange Happenings in the Family. What is Light?

Light is an amazing resource. It’s often taken for granted and then sorely missed when it’s not available. The ability to create light when it’s dark can ease concern when power is out and make living conditions more tolerable. Light is relatively easy to create, but how long it remains available can be a challenge. You’d like to get the most light for the longest time possible. Most people would rather not be left in the dark.

Suppose it’s a dark night and power suddenly goes out. The TV shuts down and the room becomes eerily quiet. As you scramble to activate your cell phone for the light it can produce, and start searching for your flashlight, foreboding shadows make you feel uneasy. Outside the world is still and the normal sounds are gone. You find your flashlight and turn it on, wondering what else you can find to add light to the room. For most of us light gives comfort, eases fear, and chases away the shadows. You begin to wonder how long the power will be out. How long must you be able to generate light without the electrical power grid? Do you have enough light? Will it hold out until power is restored?

Most people ignore power out risk until an event happens. After a period of miserable existence, when power comes back on they then begin to prepare for the next outage. Before you find yourself
