Descrição
iPad & iOS 8 for Creative Beginners is aimed at basic users, as well as, if not primarily, those who have never held an iPad in their hands. Of course, advanced users will probably learn a new trick or two, but frankly, I didn’t write this book with them in mind. Any prior knowledge of any kind of computer is not necessary, but it could be handy, otherwise you may need to read certain paragraphs several times.
After the first three introductory chapters, this manual tries to explain the basics of handling the iPad in a concentrated manner: navigation, Internet connectivity, synchronization with PCs, searching, downloading, installing and deinstalling applications, settings, and more. It also explains preinstalled applications. Chapters about other applications, other important practical purposes, and less-intended uses of the iPad follow. At the end, you will find a list of frequently asked questions, if you are one of those who is not inclined to read the whole book.
I based all examples and explanations on the first iPad Air model running on operating systems iOS versions 8.0 and 8.1. Because iPhone, Apple TV, and iPod touch use the same operating system, this book may also interest users of these devices. However, they are not discussed specifically, because they have their own characteristics and often there are simply too many differences to mention separately. Same goes for previous generations of this device.
This is in fact the third edition of iPad for Creative Beginners. It got expanded with some new chapters (Continuity, Multitasking Bar, Control Center, Notifications, VPN, iBooks, AirDrop, etc.), some other existing ones (like chapter about Siri) grew exponentially and some (like iTunes) were rationalized. There are quite a few new tips and suggestions how to use your iPad creatively. Pictures are also almost all taken anew, due to fresh user interface.

Foreword
Here is a book that talks about yet another technological revolution. Certainly, in the case of this phenomenon, we can use that term, because it truly creates a milestone for the understanding of the practical usage of information technology. Of course, the revolution did not happen overnight, despite what many may think. The iPad is not some lemon-like product invented in a garage in the space of a weekend, with a few containers ordered in China the very next week. It is a sophisticated product appearing at the right time and the right place: in the hands of a post-PC universal user. That can be said for only a few pieces of technical equipment.
The iPad’s functionality is multilayered; the possibilities of use are virtually endless. It can be a simple extension of a personal computer, or it can be a precision measuring tool. It can be pure fun, and it can be a teacher’s helper. It is useful in communication, orientation, and organization. Any old IT sea wolf can find some benefit from it, and the last pensioner can quickly get used to it.
These are my personal observations, but initially that was not the case. When I first got my hands on the first generation of iPad, it seemed to me that this was just another unnecessary and overpriced toy for those Apple freaks who already have it all. It was too large for the pocket and too small for anything useful. Navigation struck me as somewhere between funny and alien. The purpose, being, and existence of this device were not quite clear to me. Honestly. Nevertheless, I decided to get one and study it carefully. Still, it consolidated my prejudices. Adding content to it felt awkward and discovering the basics was no fun, nor was searching for information. Perhaps that’s just a human characteristic. We take time to adjust to new things, and once we’ve mastered them, we have even more trouble with further changes. I don’t know how it will go with the next revolutionary device in the field, but I bet that, at least in my case, the reaction will be the same.
Fortunately, this phase lasted only a day or two. Then things began to change. Every day, no, every hour, I found interesting, new uses for this device. First, it was a book, the next day a radio, then an altimeter. Every moment is now better utilized. Waiting rooms are no longer boring. A minute for a desktop computer to boot up is just enough time for a game of Angry Birds, and a recipe for fruit cake is now literally always at hand. I hope you understand now why I wouldn’t part with my iPad for any amount of money.

Reading Rules
The reading rules for this book are simple. You will find Notes when the secondary topic goes off on a slight tangent and Tips when the content is upgraded with useful personal experience. Pictures (figures) are more or less for your orientation and are not intended to explain the topic in detail on their own. You will find the pictures at the end of the section or paragraph, and you will be directed to them in the text, where appropriate.
