    C’mon, we gotta get to the other side! I lifted Jessica's arm up on my good shoulder as we made our way to the other end of the balcony to avoid the flames that came at us like a wall of fire, charring the white tiles on the floor. We hobbled five metres to the end. The searing heat followed us, like our own shadows. The sound drove the greatest fear into me, the way it crackled, popped and roared.

    I could see the fire trucks starting to assemble in a line below, the firefighters dispersing out onto the pavement below. I leaned over the rail to see above and below, the extent of it. The fire had spread to the first vertical half of the apartments. I lost balance when there was a loud rumbling sound from under my feet, dust and debris loosening from the support beams above. The building felt like it was swaying.

    I looked behind me, to see if we could exit through the front door of the apartment. The door had smoke surrounding the edges. Our only way out was to jump to the apartment across to us. The problem was there was only one room left of the apartment behind us, a drop of four stories below.

    I got an incoming call from Anna. Rooks, I've dispatched the fire service.

    I see them, below.

    What’s your status?

    Were okay, Jessica is injured. The fire is starting to engulf the entire block of apartments we're on.

    What floor are you on?

    Fourth!

    Hold on! I’ll patch through to their commander. They've got an appliance with a ladder.

    Hurry up! Or else we're gonna be fucking toast!

    Anna disconnected.
