Dystopian classic…
Atwood’s dystopian classic isn’t just an argument for women’s rights, but more generally a brilliant commentary on the effects of dehumanization, of putting law above love, and of the dangers of picking sides and uncritically sticking with them in the first place.

Descrição

A dystopian classic, The Handmaid’s Tale is a powerful novel about authoritarianism, identity, and misogyny.

In the near future, the United States has been replaced by the Republic of Gilead, a repressive totalitarian government that comes to prominence as a violent reaction to social unrest and declining birth rates. Gilead holds the Book of Genesis as absolute word, and terroizes all its people—but especially its women, stripping them of their identites and their freedom.

Offred, one of few women still fertile, is a Handmaid in Gilead, forced to serve a powerful Commander and his wife. Her days are simple and monotonous, and her only purpose is to bear the Commander a child.

But Offred hasn’t always been Offred. She remembers a time from before, a time when she had freedoms and choice, a time when she was more than a walking reproduction machine. But in Gilead it is dangerous to remember, and dangerous to hope.

The Handmaid’s Tale is Margaret Atwood at her best.
