Tipping The Balance: The Mental Skills Handbook For Athletes [Sport Psychology Series]
By Dr Martin Turner and Jamie Barker

About this ebook
At the highest level, athletes are highly skilled, highly trained, and highly proficient machines. Take the 100m sprint for example. All of the athletes in the Olympic final can run sub-ten seconds. They are all fast! But on the day, the deciding factor is often not how fast they are, but rather, how fast they can run under the high pressure circumstances of an Olympic final. The ability to deal with pressure is not about any physical or technical skill, but is more about what goes on between the ears – in other words, it is psychological and about performing with freedom, dealing with distractions, regulating emotions, maintaining self-confidence, and trusting the body’s ability to deliver under pressure.
“The ability to produce a world-beating time is about how you use your mind to allow your body to function with freedom and fluency.”
Many athletes grow up with the philosophy that their mental approach to performance is fixed. They do the same things over and over again and expect excellence. But we know that mental approaches are not fixed. They are extremely changeable and adaptable, and therefore the greatest athletes can develop their mental approaches to fulfil their potential. Athletes who can deal with pressure enjoy their sport more, achieve excellence and are resilient to the demands of competition and training.
Tipping The Balance offers contemporary evidence-based and highly practical mental strategies that help an athlete to develop the crucial mental skills that enable them to thrive under pressure, perform consistently when it matters most, and enjoy the challenge of the big event.
This book is about empowering you - the athlete - no matter what level you perform at. In this book you will discover the secrets of how the world’s greatest athletes draw on cutting edge psychological skills to use what’s between their ears to maximize performance.

The Hidden Motor: The Psychology of CyclingThe Hidden Motor: The Psychology of Cycling by Martijn Veltkamp
Cycling is one of the world’s great sports. From The Tour de France to the Paris-Roubaix to velodromes across the globe, it encompasses many disciplines: from climbing mountains to massed sprints to the loneliness of the time trial.
But what separates race winners from the nearly men? Top cyclists are physically similar, train the right way, eat the right things, and yet there is something that separates them. It’s their hidden engine – not a secret mechanical aid – but what’s between their ears that makes the difference.
In this superbly-researched and accessible book for fans of cycling, psychologist and cycling author Martijn Veltkamp gets to the heart of the supremely demanding and challenging sport of professional cycling, and the mental side of performance that drives success. He addresses fundamental questions in an easy-to-read way, including: what motivates riders and how does motivation affect performance? Where does a rider’s fear of descending originate from, and how do you get rid of it? Why do some cyclists succumb under pressure, whilst others do not? Why is cycling on your own mentally more challenging than when in a group?
Written for connoisseurs of cycling, but equally rewarding for general readers, the book examines cycling from the viewpoint of classic psychological studies, and stage and race histories, as well as interviews with former professional riders. The Hidden Motor is a must-read book for anyone who wants to know all about this most exceptional of sports.
This book is the English language translation of De Verborgen Motor, originally published in The Netherlands in 2015.

Acknowledgements
Martin Turner: This book, and indeed my career to date, would not exist without the occurrence of some highly significant events, and without the influence of some highly significant people. I thank Professor Marc Jones, whose influence on my career is immeasurable. Many of our conversations about the psychology of performance (and some of our research!) made it into this book in some way or another. I also thank my co-author, colleague, and friend, Associate Professor Jamie Barker, who saw something in me when I was an undergraduate that I didn’t know was there; a passion for psychology. In some ways this book has existed in my head for some time, but my gratitude goes out to our editor and publisher James for bringing those thoughts and ideas to life. I thank all of the athletes, coaches, and business professionals I have worked with, and continue to work with, to date. I gain a huge amount from the work we have done, and continue to do together. In addition, I thank all of the colleagues that have supported me in my research and consultancy to date, you know who you are.
Jayne, when I met you I was directionless and inert. You gave me purpose and energy. Thank you for being there and for being you. As with all that I do, this book is for you.
Jamie Barker: This book is the culmination of many years of research and applied practice and would not exist without the influence of a number of key individuals. I would like to express my sincere thanks to my friend, colleague and co-author, Dr Martin Turner. Martin is an excellent academic with a very bright future. I thank him for continuing to support and challenge my thinking along with keeping my beliefs rational. I also thank Professor Marc Jones who continues to provide excellent mentorship in helping me to shape my ideas and goals. I would also like to thank all of my colleagues who have supported my research and applied work - it is a pleasure working with such talented and creative individuals.
I am indebted to my parents, Linda and Roger, for giving me the confidence to have ‘no regrets’ and for their continued love and support in everything I do. I owe everything to the endless patience, support and love of my wife Emma - you are a truly remarkable wife and mother. Finally, to my daughters, Lucy and Molly - you are my world and all I am I give to you - just not the season ticket!
The Performance
The crowd erupts. It’s deafening. It’s enough to turn my stomach.
That felt good. I return to my chair after my warm-up to rapturous applause and cheers that shake the arena and fill me with energy. My warm-up was a great reminder of how hard I have worked in the lead-up to this match. I feel rested and fresh. My diet, my commitment in training, my unstoppable quest to improve every single day. I am a well-oiled and perfectly fuelled machine that is peaking at the right moment. All of the things that are in my control have been meticulously controlled. I don’t know how my competitor will perform. I cannot control this aspect of the match so I will focus on what I can control; my performance. Today is about doing what I do best, which is playing excellent solid tennis, and being a professional.
I sit alone in my chair, in the arena, looking out onto the court. This is the biggest match of my career, and the first time my country has reached the tournament final in its history. This burden weighs heavy, but this is my chance to fulfil my potential. One chance to make history. Family, friends, and supporters look on in anxious and desperate hope that I succeed today. I want to win more than anything in the world, and losing would be the biggest disappointment of my career.
In my chair, I start to exercise control over my performance preparations. I go into my systematic mental routine, the same routine I use for each match, to ensure that I am in the right state to fulfil my potential. I am now inside my mind. Although my eyes are open I am processing nothing external to my body and mind.
A quick body scan reveals that I am nervous. Shaking legs, queasiness, and a racing heart tell me that my body is doing what it can to prepare me for the intensely physical battle that I am about to encounter. I picture the blood rushing to my brain and limbs, carrying with it the oxygen and energy I will require to produce a performance here. I am lucky that my body does this naturally, helping me to prepare for performance. I focus on my breathing for a moment, turning a heavy and confused pattern into a rhythmic and controlled pulse. I feel composed now.
Feeling like a machine on standby, I watch a movie in my head. The film is about me and it’s an epic. It contains footage from the future and I see ‘me’ expressing myself fully on court: perfect ground strokes, precision serves, high energy, controlling the tempo, getting to every ball. As I picture this epic, I can feel the impact of each stroke in my arms and hands; I hear the ball leave my racket and echo around the arena, and I can smell the sweat from my shirt breeze past my face as I move swiftly back into position. I create all of this in my head. I see everything through my own eyes and it’s a picture of dominance and laser-like focus on each point. Everything I do, I know I can do, and have done before.
Year after year, match after match, the pressure of performing has shaped who I am and has toughened me. What was once trepidation is now excitement. I can’t wait to get this match started so I can show people what I am capable of.
As I snap out of this positive bubble, I remind myself of my key jobs today: express myself fully
, control the tempo
, and make every shot count
. As I say these words in my head, the images return like a highlight reel from my future.
It’s getting close now. My body is ready, my mind is ready. It’s my service game that will start the match. I focus only on the things I need to do to perform well. I remind myself to serve aggressively
, set myself after each serve
, and stay on my toes for a possible return
. I see myself executing these elements perfectly in my head, over and over again. This is all I have in my mind, nothing else matters at this moment.
The umpire signals and I stand to take to the court. I trigger my laser-like focus by reminding myself that I am ready
. I walk with chest out, back straight, shoulders back: the picture of confidence.
The crowd quietens as I stare straight down at the baseline I stand upon. As I bounce the ball I visualize my serve. In my mind I see the ball in my hand and I toss it to the perfect height above my stretched body. As I swing through the ball I feel my muscles jolt with power. The ball disappears over the net… then blank.
As my mind clears I toss the ball upwards. Now it’s time for my mind and body to take charge.
It’s time for the big show. It’s time to perform.
A Winning State of Body and Mind
How are the best athletes in the world able to function under the immense pressure of competitive performance? By harnessing the potential of their minds to stay committed, train smart, and get themselves into a winning state of body and mind when the time is right.
This book is about getting you into a winning state of body and mind for your sporting performances. The ability of elite athletes to exercise control over their mental and physical states during performance can offer many lessons to anyone who wants to fulfil their potential when it matters most.
The example, above, contained many of the key elements to accessing the winning mindset. This book will help you to develop your own way, just like the tennis athlete developed his own way. We hope you are ready for a journey that will maximize you and your potential. Enjoy the ride!
Chapter 1: Know Thyself
Nervousness took over first his mind, and then his body… The contrast between the commanding McIlroy of day three and the disconsolate McIlroy of day four came down to psychology – no more and no less. Between the first and the third day, he had convinced himself he could win; by the fourth, he
feared he could not. [1] Brian Viner, Journalist and Author
The above quote neatly captures the essence of this first chapter. The mind and body are inextricably linked so that if the functioning of the mind is erroneous, so too is our physical performance.
The quote relates to Rory McIlroy, professional golfer, World Number One, and a four-time major champion; a man who experienced one of the most catastrophic and highly public performance meltdowns of recent times. At the 2011 Masters, on the final day, McIlroy was leading the field when he got to the 10th hole. At the 10th, something went wrong very suddenly, and very badly.
McIlroy pulled his drive into the trees, and the ball ended up nestling next to the white wooden cabins alongside the fairway, 100 yards from the tee. McIlroy laudably chipped out of an awkward position for his second shot, but then pulled his third. His fourth shot was a chip from under the green that rolled back towards him once it had landed. McIlroy eventually chipped onto the green and putted the ball in two, scoring seven in total. He dropped from first place to
