INTRODUCTION

As a writer, I have discovered that I like a particular kind of writing prompt, the simplest of writing prompts. The books that give entire scenarios or seasonal order don’t tempt me at all because I want the freedom to imagine.

A simple word or phrase on a bank sheet of paper gathers momentum as I wonder at what it could mean, where it could take place, why, and what if? What if the words green turtle aren’t referring to a turtle at all? What if it’s the shield formation for a group of space pirates? What if? And then, I write.

Another time with that same simple prompt, I might ask: who does this turtle belong to? has it escaped? who finds it? And then, I write.
