Introduction
Did you know that since the beginning of time, women and children have always been the focus of violence, especially brutality at the hands of their fellow beings? The cases of crimes against women and children have been a part of social life for centuries, and that is why self-defense against such incidents have also been a part of training and upbringing in many parts of the world down the ages.
Different items for self-defense have been used down the centuries, by different peoples, and also training to protect oneself from harm has also been the way of life. However, such warrior training was stopped in the 19th and 20th century in many parts of the West, because people were more concerned about training their children either for a profession or for taking care of a family.
That is why these self-defense and body strengthening exercises slowly and steadily went out of a normal day to day’s activities. From the 16th century onward, the idea began to be promulgated, that it was the man’s job to protect the woman, and it was sinful for a woman to think of anything to protect herself, because she was doing something which was contrary to her nature. Well, these were the dark ages.

Self Defense for Women - Dueep J. Singh
And that is why women instead of being self-reliant, became wimpish and helpless, calling for help, instead of taking solid steps to protect themselves.
In Victorian England, the mere idea of a woman fighting to protect herself would have been met with great shock. They were more bothered about woman like behavior. So that is the reason why crimes against women escalated during this time. In fact, this is the time when women learned that crimes against themselves and molestation was something they had to face. And they had no judicial recourse, because their molester could get away with a defense of The Woman Tempted Me.
Believe it or not, this is still one of the defenses being used in courts to get offenders off, and also she was asking for it.
And this is the reason why even today in the 21st century, there is absolutely no recourse for justice. The woman is going to be ostracized by her own gender, because she has now somehow become impure.
This is why so many crimes against women as well as children are not being reported and that is why these crimes flourish all over the world.
So how does one defend oneself from a possible molestation?
When I visited Burma, my hostess showed me a beautiful hair ornament. It was just a very sturdy and ornamental hairpin made up of metal. Her great-grandmother used it to keep her hair in place. While holding it, I was astonished to see that that pin had a very sharp point. So,
I said, Why is this point so needle sharp?
The answer was so that grandma could just whip it out from her hair and stab any prospective attacker. In the neck or just puncture the heart.
So how many of these ornaments did great grandma wear in her hair, I asked. About six, said my hostess, calmly putting the ornament into her rich tresses. So that she never ran out of weapons.
I was rather disturbed at this matter of fact acceptance of the possibility of being attacked, but she took it in the days’ work. It was as common a fact of life, as breathing fresh air every day.
But then she had a full head of hair. Nowadays, you may not have a place to attach this hair ornament in your closely cropped crew cut. Especially when you have the sharp point, digging into the nape of your neck, or into your skull[1] But the possibility of you being attacked and being molested is something which has not lessened during the 21st century. We may consider ourselves more civilized, but the basic human instinct of fighting and destroying anything weaker than us is the reason why crimes against women and children, and even men and boys is still one of the major concerns of police forces all over the world.
Mental Attitude Towards Violence
The immediate reaction of any traumatic abuse is a mental negation of reality.
While counseling a person who was traumatized because of an attack, I asked her why she did not shout or protest, or even struggle to save herself. Her answer was, that her mind had panicked and it felt like this could not be happening to her. It had shut down and that is why she could not struggle to save herself.
Also, she had
