About this ebook

This article (11,000 words, 25 Photos) discusses our four day trip to Budapest. We present a day-by-day account of our activities. Our impressions, key facts, a selection of photos, relevant opening times, entrance fees, and references and resources are provided for each of these activities. We visited Budapest during December so it was very cold and the flora was not at its best. Nevertheless our visit was most enjoyable.
This visit to Budapest presented the first opportunity for us to walk along the banks of the Danube past the three famous bridges. The other highlights included a visit to the Great Market Hall with plenty of fresh and cooked produce, and arts and crafts; a confronting and thought provoking visit to the House of Terror; a most enjoyable presentation of the Nutcracker at the National Opera House; an outstanding, albeit too short, classical concert at Stephen’s Basilica; and an interesting walk along the full length of Andrássy Avenue to the Millennium Monument.
Budapest has come a long way over the past two decades having shaken off the effects of the oppressive regimes from 1939 to 1990. It is emerging as a chic modern city rich in culture and heritage.
If the chance to visit Budapest presents itself, take it, you won’t be disappointed.

IntroductionOS Wayfarer is not a business or an enterprise but a passion! At its core, OS Wayfarer is about self-publishing eBooks, especially our travel eBooks. So far, we have self-published eight travel eBooks.OS Wayfarer is sustained through the partnership of Graham and Katherine Kingston. It is our passion for travel, and my (Graham’s) passion (some might say obsession) for personal computing, photography, and project management, that has resulted in OS Wayfarer. Fortunately, Katherine knows her history, provides great editing, calms Graham’s exuberance, anchors the outfit in some reality, and ensures a measure of class. We endeavour, for less than the price of a cup of coffee, to share our travel experiences with you. We hope you enjoy our eBooks. Our approachFour key principles underpin our approach:•We love to take a “Do it Yourself” approach as much as is feasible: in respect of our travel, eBooks.•A cost-effective approach is always front of mind.•A commitment to maintaining standards is important to us.•A desire to share our knowledge and expertise thereby helping others to enhance their travel experiences. We strive to be professional; and to adopt practical, affordable, achievable, and effective approaches to the development and publishing of our eBooks. Our backgroundsTravelWe are retired baby boomers and we have been at this caper, in one form or another since about 2009.We travelled as a part of our professional working lives but to less developed countries. We lived and worked in Bandung, Indonesia (four years), Kitwe, Zambia (four years) and Kuching, Sarawak (two years). These wonderful opportunities provided a rich experience for our family and instilled a desire to travel (perhaps it was always there). We have travelled quite a bit since retiring and intend to continue. To date we have visited various parts of the world: for example, Athens, Prague, Isle of Skye, along the Queensland Coast, Istanbul, Bucharest, Budapest, and Barcelona (it just so happens that all these visits resulted in an eBook!).Earlier we travelled to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, as well as Italy on two Insight Tours.ProfessionalI (Graham) started out as a Radio Technician before becoming a technical teacher, and technical teacher trainer. This foundation led to a very enjoyable career as an adviser, program/project tenderer and manager, and independent consultant in international development assistance.Katherine commenced her career as a primary school teacher before becoming an ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) teacher, Self-Access Centre manager, and IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) Centre manager.

    About Us

    Introduction

    Impressions

Budapest presents itself as an increasingly modern European city proud in its culture whilst mindful of its recent tragic past – it wants to move on.

Andrássy Avenue emphasizes Budapest’s aspirational future with shops selling up-market brand labels; its rich culture with the State Opera House and other art establishments close-by; mansions pointing to a rich upper class; and culminating in Heroes Square with its Millennium Monument flanked as it is by the Palace of Art and Museum of Fine Arts.

The House of Terror is a standout attraction and demonstrates how the Hungarians want to remember but not repeat their recent history.

The Hungarian State Opera House is a wonderful cultural icon readily affordable and accessible to nationals and tourists alike. St Stephen's Basilica, along with its outstanding concerts of classical music, also mirrors Hungarian culture.

To be able to walk along the banks of the mighty Danube for the first time was something we were looking forward to, and even though the weather was freezing, the walk was great. We walked from our apartment to the Chain Bridge, along the Danube to the White Bridge (Elizabeth) and further along the river to the Green Bridge (Liberty) before visiting the Great Market Hall.

The Great Market Hall is our style of market: a great mixture of stalls selling fresh produce and local arts and crafts, and local style eateries. It retains a strong air of authenticity which has not be been tainted by an overt quest for the tourist dollar – it is a market by locals for locals and tourists as well. For example, the entrances to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul are clogged with tourist buses and the stall holders seemingly look to the tourists for their income.

The only disappointing part of our visit was the overnight train trip from Bucharest, the dowdy main railway station Keleti, and the poorly signed Metro.

We look back on our visit to Budapest with fond memories.
