About this ebook
The development of digital technology since its inception a little over fifty years ago has been extraordinary .
To put it mildyl, it is now an integral part of so much of our lives. Where would we be without our computers,
televisions, and telephones ! And that’s only taking a narrow view of the contribution digital technology
makes to the cultures of most countries throughout the world. Very few understand the many levels of
complexity of computers . Most have an operational ability to use computers and that satisfies their needs.
Some people, however, may enjoy probing a little deeper into this significant aspect of our cultures and
this ebook will help them to do that. So, boost your Digital know-how!

I was brought up in a home that had no books. My hard-working parents were so involved in keeping a roof over our heads and food on the table that there was no money for books and little time for reading. Sounds a bit like a sketch from "Monty Python", doesn't it? Fortunately for me , they saw the benefits that a good education can produce and, over the years, I attended four tertiary institutions to gain academic qualifications, the final one being a Ph.D. I had a period in the British Army ( Intelligence Corps), serving mainly in Europe. I ran a marathon once – and once was enough! I taught in 2 Primary schools and specialised in English in three High schools and three uni's. Publishers in The U.K. , Australia and the U.S.A have been brave enough to publish 14 of my books- all educational - mostly non-fiction, factual stuff. I've also written children's stories, and recently quite a few e-books. I’ve enjoyed it and it's kept me out of mischief!

Much of the vocabulary of computing has existed and remained the same since electronic digital machines first appeared in the late 1950’s and 1960’s. What have not remained the same but have changed radically and rapidly are new devices and processes and, above all, the size and speed of components.
When we are using computers ,there are things we can see (e.g. Monitor, Window, Icons, Printer, Keyboard, etc.) and things that are hidden in the computer in layers of complexity that we cannot see (e.g. CPU, RAM, ROM, CHIP, etc.).
The majority of us have limited understanding of how digital systems interact to make a computer work , just as we have only a limited knowledge of the vast complexity of the human brain -and how it governs everything we do. We are quite happy when we are able to manipulate computer devices and processes to achieve what we want.
This ebook is called Boost Your Digital Know-how
and not Computing
and certainly not All About Computing
because it does not and cannot encompass all the intricate, multi-layered aspects that comprise computing. You won’t be able tick all the boxes. There are too many. But you will be able to tick a fair proportion of them. So, this ebook emphasises some of the fundamental terms and processes from the astronomical complexity of computing.
SYSTEMS
System is from the Greek sustema meaning a whole thing which is made up of parts, all of which are related to the whole It came to mean the way in which something is organised methodically, so that all parts are arranged and interact according to a plan.
Input devices such as a Mouse , Keyboard, Touchscreen, Disk Drive, and Video Camera are used to put data into a computer. Output devices , such as Monitors, Speakers and Printers extract and display data from the computer.
Machines work by using systems. You will not understand how machines and computing work until you understand these systems.
A computing system comprises the hardware system and the software system that together run a computer. These systems are inter-dependent. The one cannot work without the other. The hardware system is the car and the software system is the person driving. The software directs the hardware system to perform an action
Without software, the hardware would not know how to function. So, hardware depends on software and software depends on hardware. They mutually combine to form a computer system.
A bus is a circuit that connects one part of the Motherboard to another. The more data a bus can handle at one time, the faster it allows information to travel. The speed of the bus, measured in megahertz (MHz), refers to how much data can move across the bus simultaneously.
Getting started:
Boot is an abbreviation of a bootstrap which people at one time used to get their boots on. To pull yourself up by your boot straps,
implies that you do something without anybody else's help - by your own efforts. You pull your boots on and get going. In other words – start
To boot up a computer is simply to turn on the power to the computer and then the Bios (Basic Input/Output System, which is stored in ROM) gives the computer instructions on how to start . It beeps, checks itself and then loads the Operating System which controls the data-flow between itself and attached devices, such as the Hard Disk, Video Adapter, Keyboard, Mouse, and Printer, etc.
You can press CTR+ESC on the Keyboard to display your start menu.
A hardware system has many different kinds of hardware that can be installed inside and be connected to the outside of a computer. Installed inside the computer case are: Motherboard, Central Processing Unit (CPU),Video Card, Hard Drive (HDD),Solid-State Drive (SSD),Optical Drive and Card Reader.
