About this ebook
Tamara tells her story of how she was harassed by her autistic friend. She does not hold a grudge against her friend rather she hopes she can help people like her friend Sam by sharing her story with the world. Is it really rape if a person does not understand what they are doing is wrong? Can society do a better job of communicating with autistic people in ways that they will learn to understand?
Tamara shares how she became drunk and allowed her friend Sam to mess around with her. She admits that she was not alert and never said yes or no. Typically people with autism have a difficult time understanding non-verbal communication and facial expressions. It is very important in a sexual relationships that we communicate consent for people with autism to understand. Since autistic people cannot understand non-verbal communication and body language so there is no way for them to know what they are doing is right and wrong.
Tamara describes her sexual interaction with her autistic friend Sam and talks about ways that she could have communicated better with Sam about what she wanted and did not want to experience with him. Are people with autism really guilty of a crime if they do not understand what they are doing is wrong?
Here is an excerpt from "Raped By an Autistic Man Is It Really Rape?"
"Why should mental health have its own healthcare system? Why should it not be a part of the whole entire physical health care system? Does America really understand mental illness? There are so many questions that remain unanswered when it comes to understanding mental illness.
One of the things I remember most about Sam that night where we fooled around was that he kept asking me questions. I ignored his questions but I wonder if things would have been different had I been able to honestly answer his questions. He kept asking me over and over again if I was okay and he wanted to make sure that what he was doing was fine. I just nodded my head in agreement because I was so far out of it. I do not think that Sam is a bad person. I failed to give him honest signals and honest answers about what I wanted to do."
