About this ebook

While this tale deals with the misery and squalor of war it focuses on one special character named Frank. Frank’s a somewhat slow-witted man who is the cook for the soldiers. He’s kind and has a deep admiration for one Jimmy Gambier. Frank is willing to do anything to keep their friendship alive, and his ability to do so is about to be tested. This story deals with cannibalism and the brutality of war infused with a supernatural twist that I found just about perfect.

It was also very nice to see the meek cook grow as a person as the tale progressed, pushing himself well past his usual limits, in part because he felt that things couldn’t really get any worse. It also had that element of “fortress” about it, literally as it was set in Fort Henry, and metaphorically, the known and the unknown overlapping in a “strong” place that was all too weak.
Dark Distractions (UK)

Bruns has tension building down to an art form. I was squirming in my seat to find out what would happen in the end.

The realism here is stunning.
—Quiet Fury Books Blog

I loved the “menace” that intertwined with the more familiar “war story” vibe.
—Dark Distractions (UK)

He spends time crafting the setting without making you feel weighted down with description. His deft hand likely stems from his years as a travel writer.

The Finger People is a novella from The Gothic Shift:

From Reader's Favorite Reviews:
The Gothic Shift is a macabre collection of four darkly twisted novellas that are sure to intrigue, thrill, and spook even the bravest reader. Reminiscent of classic Gothic horror stories by the likes of Edgar Allan Poe, it is Bruns' style of writing that is most pleasing.

“I found this book to be an extreme delight. Bruns builds each piece with subtle tension rather than in your face horror. But do not misunderstand that statement, the horror is very real. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.”
—Horror Novel Reviews

"Atmosphere defines Bruns' Gothic Shift. I enjoyed the subtleties of this collection. The stories in this volume are little nibbles at the edges of your mind. Recommended."
—Hellnotes

“A juicy collection of stories, with some great character development and a lot of original ideas. Recommended!”
