About this ebook
the Campbell s Soup Company, which had its canning plant in Camden until the 1980s. Delaware Township remained relatively quiet until the 1920s, when the first residential building boom resulted in neighborhoods such as Colwick, Erlton, Woodland, and Barlow. It was changed forever in 1942, when Vineland
businessman Eugene Mori opened the Garden State Park racetrack, which became a popular destination for war-weary workers. Mori also opened the Cherry Hill Inn in 1954. The old Cherry Hill Farm and its brilliant cherry trees would inspire the township s
residents to change their community s name to Cherry Hill seven years later. Cherry Hill, New Jersey captures the growth of this charming suburban community from the early 20th century through the 1990s. See local landmarks that have long since vanished, such as the Latin Casino, the Cherry Hill Inn, the original Garden State Park, and the Cherry Hill Arena, as well as old farmsteads, street scenes, and the people that helped shape the community.

Mike Mathis and Joanna Falcone Sullivan grew up in Marple Township and vividly recall the kidnapping and murder of Gretchen Harrington and its effect on their community. Like with the people interviewed in this book, the tragedy was forever seared in their memory. Both authors started their journalism careers at the Paxon Hollow Junior High School newspaper, the Hollow Log, and have worked for decades in the newspaper and communications industry. As adults, they long talked about writing this book and finally saw an opportunity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

EARLY BEGINNINGS
The Colestown Cemetery represents the only lasting remnant of Colestown, a small village founded in 1676 on the south branch of the Pennsauken Creek. The village, which contained two stores, a blacksmith shop, and several dwellings, grew with the popularity of the Fountain Hotel resort in the 1800s. The stone gatehouse was built in 1858, although the earliest burial in the cemetery was recorded in 1746. The gatehouse has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. (Dennis McDonald/Burlington County Times.)
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church was built inside the grounds of Colestown Cemetery in 1751. It was destroyed by fire in 1899. (Historical Society of Haddonfield.)
The Inskeep House on Brick Road was built by John Inskeep, a veteran of the Revolutionary War who served as mayor of Philadelphia in 1800 and from 1804 to 1807. He was also president of the Insurance Company of North America. Inskeep, who was born in 1757, died in 1834. (Cherry Hill Public
