SURROUNDINGS AND EARLY TIMES MOUNTAIN MAGNETISM
North Ogden was settled at the base of majestic Ben Lomond Peak in 1851 by early pioneers. The floor of North Ogden’s valley is a remnant of Lake Bonneville, an ancient, great inland sea, which left rich, fertile soil for farming. Evidence of the lake’s shoreline is still visible on Ben Lomond and surrounding mountain ranges, even though the lake’s waters receded over 10,000 years ago. The city was incorporated August 6, 1950.
The exceptional photograph above of snow-capped Ben Lomond Peak was taken in the 1940s from the Ogden Golf and Country Club. The peak’s annual snowfall is 150–200 inches. North Ogden was settled in the pristine foothills of the prominent pyramid-shaped mountain in 1851. The peak was named by early pioneer Mary (Wilson) Montgomery (seen in the image at left) because it resembled Ben Lomond Peak, which sits at the edge of Loch (Lake) Lomond near her beloved hometown in Scotland. Ben Lomond (Beinn Laomainn in Scottish Gaelic) translates to Beacon Mountain.
Jonathan Campbell Jr. and his nephew Samuel Campbell were among the first settlers in North Ogden. They entered the valley in 1850, set up tents, and dreamed of building a settlement. They were driven out by Native Americans, but returned the following spring to remain as permanent residents. Pictured are Jonathan Jr., son Nephi, and wife Phoebe Campbell.
The Campbells were the first pioneers to arrive and settle in North Ogden. Pictured from left to right are (first row) Ben Campbell, Samuel and wife C. R. Frances (Hall) Campbell, and J. Heber Campbell; (second row) Samuel Joseph Jr. and wife Clarissa (Reynolds) Campbell, Anna (Darling) Campbell (wife of Ben), Jake and wife Polly (Chapman) Campbell, and Sarah Alois (Henry) Campbell (wife of Heber).
John Riddle (left) and his son Isaac moved north from Ogden with 200 head of cattle in 1850. The men wintered them in North Ogden and lived in a dugout through the winter. They retreated to Lorin Farr Fort in Ogden when tension escalated with Native Americans. The region’s Shoshone were reluctantly forced to share the land with the incoming pioneers. They called the area Opecarry,
which meant stick in the head.
In the spring of 1851, John and Isaac returned to the dugout location to establish a farm and plant crops. The Campbells and Riddles, the first pioneers in the area, were followed by about 18 additional families by October of the same year. The 1920s photograph below was taken of Ben Lomond, providing a glimpse of the area in early
