Introduction

Rumors of the wristwatch’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Sure, a watch can seem something of an anachronism in the cell-phone age, but the centuries-old art of horology continues to capture the imagination, fascination and, yes, the money of men around the world. In fact, today, watches are enjoying a revival of sorts. Men are scrambling to adorn their wrists and watch brands are all too eager to accommodate them.

If you’re the kind of person who is content with owning only one watch, this book is not for you. But if you’ve been bitten by the watch-collecting bug, whether for material investment purposes or purely for variety, we’re here to help. Too many men lack a strategy when it comes to building a watch collection and are seduced by the next siren piece that sings its song. This strategy, or rather lack of one, can lead to a wasteful string of flipping: buying, selling and trading a series of watches, forever convinced that the right one is just around the corner and never fully content for it.

Others collect toward narrow-focus goals: They continue to buy the same sort of watch over and over again. Some aspire to acquire only World War II pilot’s watches, Rolex sports watches with plastic crystals or (shudder) Casio calculator watches from the ‘70s. This strategy, obsessive though it may be, does have its merits. But if it’s the strategy you’re presently pursuing, this book is not for you either.

This book is for the man who aspires to have a well-rounded collection, one that is versatile enough to cover all the bases. No matter what the man at the watch store tells you, there is no single model watch that is perfect for all situations. Sure, a certain fictional secret agent wears his dive watch with his dinner jacket and a wetsuit. That secret agent is not a watch collector.

Just as there is no single watch that can be worn in all settings, there is no single watch that can scratch all itches. If, after much internal debate, you finally settle on buying a chronograph, you’ll soon want a dress watch. Splurge on a dressy chronograph, and it won’t be long before you’re eyeing your friend’s dive watch. So it’s a good idea to identify the types of watches you want and then carefully fill in the blanks. If this strikes you as a reasonable strategy, then this is the book for you.

Some of the watches featured in this book are astronomically expensive and hard to find. This is, after all, the crème de la crème of watch collections. The goal in presenting them to you is to highlight the ultimate examples of each of the chosen watch types. Knowing what is considered to be the best in each category will help you understand that category better and choose from it more intelligently. While amazing new watches are being introduced all the time, the pieces here will stand the test of time.

The book is organized into seven chapters, each one devoted to a specific watch category—the dress watch, the chronograph, the dive watch, the complication watch, the beater watch, the vintage watch and the modern haute horlogerie watch. Each category features a description and historical context. Then the most perfect example of that watch type is revealed.

Creating the ultimate watch collection is an ambitious goal, a quixotic attempt to hit a moving, and highly subjective target. Some of the choices were tough to make, and in some instances storied brands like Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet and Seiko lost out to young upstarts like A. Lange & Söhne, MB&F and Casio. We don’t expect you to agree with all of our choices, but we do hope that you will close this book with an appreciation for our collection and an improved perspective on assembling your own.
