BRACKET CLOCKS

FOLLOWING THE RULE observed by St. Ambrose as to his behavioui in Milan and in Rome, we conform to the accepted custom in applying the term ‘bracket clock’ to those much admired timepieces which, to-day, are to be seen usually on a mantel. If, however, we were submissive to purism, this chapter head would be ‘Portable Mantel and Table Clocks’ because they were intended to be carried from room to room for which reason a stout handle was fixed above the case—later cases have a handle on each side.

That they were commonly placed on a table is confirmed by a feature found with all the finer bracket clocks and one often overlooked, i.e. the finely engraved designs on the brass back-plate of the movement (22) and the fact that the back door is glazed. Obviously, this indicates that the back of the clock was intended to be seen as it would be when on a table. Grandfather clocks which were essentially wall pieces, and were not infrequently fastened to a wall, have a similar brass plate, but this is invariably plain.
