    LEARNING SESSION

The average Christian, if asked, surely will declare his or her love for God. But how many of us are sure that our understanding of what it means to love God matches up with the standard that He has set? If we compare our love for God with His love for us, will our love even come close to His? While we realize that we cannot compete with God on any level, especially in the manner that He loves, it is still legitimate to ask whether we could be doing better. Today’s lesson emphasizes God’s love and provisions for His people. Although it starts in the Old Testament, this lesson points us to the love of God which is found in the gift of Jesus Christ.

    I.   LOVE GOD WITH ALL OF YOUR HEART

If we possess an authentic relationship with God, we will love Him with our whole hearts. Christians whose love for God is heartfelt place no limit on their love for the Lord. Christians also will be driven to please God in every way.

KEY VERSE: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33, KJV)

In Jesus’ day, there were men who unquestionably loved the Law but lacked the sensitivity to live according to the spirit of the Law. One day, one of them asked Jesus, ‘Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ (Matt. 22:36, ESV). Jesus responded, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind’ (v. 37, ESV). Jesus’ rendering of the words of Deuteronomy replaces ‘might’ (Deut. 6:5, ESV) with mind. Jesus teaches us that the power of the mind is connected to the strength of heaven. The act of loving God with the mind is fundamental to the concept of faith. Recall the woman with the issue of discharging blood who was told by Jesus, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well’ (Luke 8:48, ESV). Her healing was a gift from God. Her mind, however, had to be in such a state as to believe that she could be healed. Moreover, the power of the mind serves as the gateway to the soul and the spirit. We have to love God with the power that we possess, knowing that our entire being will be blessed as our love for Him grows and deepens.

II. HONOR GOD AS YOUR CREATOR

We must ever remain vigilant in giving praises and honor to God as our Creator. Recall how at the conclusion of the homegoing and committal service of a saint, we invoke the line ashes to ashes, dust to dust. This is a poignant reminder that we came into the world with nothing and we will leave this world with nothing. When we fully acknowledge God as our Creator, our lives become a quest to return to Him for the glory of everlasting life in heaven.

    MAKING IT RELEVANT:

What does the love of God mean to you? How have you experienced God’s love this week?

Our Creator, however, knows that we need some boundaries to shape and discipline our lives. Consequently, there is a plausible reason for the Ten Commandments. God reminded the nation of Israel that He alone came to their rescue when they needed deliverance from bondage and from their oppressed state. The Ten Commandments were conditions and guidelines of what was to be a new covenant. This was necessary because the Israelites had often forgotten God’s blessings when it appeared that danger had subsided. Due to the Israelites belief in the power of self, God had to remind the people that He rescued them from their oppression in Egypt (see Exod. 20:2).

Christians today are also guilty of not remembering God’s work of deliverance in their lives. An example of a believer demonstrating such forgetfulness can be seen in an ill brother who makes promises to God, such as If you heal me from this sickness, I will faithfully go to church. But once the illness subsides and the danger passes, he reverts to his former lack of dedication to the Church. God desires for Christians to show respect and awe for His mercy and grace. This is our way of honoring Him.

III. MAKE PLEASING GOD YOUR FIRST PRIORITY

Pleasing God should be our highest priority. But because of the attractiveness of the trappings and material possessions of the world, we
