    LEARNING SESSION

Think about a time you were so excited about something that it made you scream. Maybe your parents gave you a new bike for Christmas or hosted your birthday party at the skating rink. Your excitement comes from your desire and love for these things.

You know what it means to love gifts, but do you know what it means to love God? Loving God is more than just being excited about Him. Today we will learn what it truly means to love God.

    I.    Love God

After God freed the Israelites from slavery under the Egyptian people, He gave them the Ten Commandments so they could obey and love God. The first commandment instructed God’s people to not have any idols—the Lord should be their only God. The Israelites had lived among the Egyptians, a people who worshiped idols, for more than four hundred years. After they left Egypt, the Israelites continued to worship idols because they had learned and practiced the customs of the Egyptians. If you have ever done something out of habit, you can understand why the Israelites still would worship idols. However, obeying God’s command to only worship Him is necessary in order to love Him. A person cannot love both God and idols.

You might not worship idols, but you may make something else more important than God. Have you ever chosen to watch television or play a game when you were supposed to be reading your Bible? Anything that you choose instead of God can become an idol. Choose to love God by making Him a priority each day by reading your Bible, praying, and obeying His Word.

    II.   Honor God

When do you pray to God? Is it a daily habit, or do you pray only when you need something? In order to love God, we must honor Him. We do not honor God when we only come to Him when we have troubles. We honor Him when we build a relationship with Him every day—not just when it’s convenient.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 says that we should grow our relationship with God while we are young. When you have good days and when you have bad days, you should speak to God about your life. Creating a relationship with God while you are young will help you honor Him during even more difficult times in the future. Have you heard the saying practice makes perfect? This means that you can become great at something when you continually work at it. If you play a sport, you know how important it is to practice. In the same way, if you work at your relationship with God, you will grow to love Him more, become more devoted to Him, and become more strengthened by His Word. You will be less likely to fall into temptation because you will ask God for guidance and help in tempting
