About this ebook

Up close with the ocean's most fearsome and famous predator and the scientists who study them—just twenty-six miles from the Golden Gate Bridge!

A few miles from San Francisco lives a population of the ocean's largest and most famous predators. Each fall, while the city's inhabitants dine on steaks, salads, and sandwiches, the great white sharks return to California's Farallon Islands to dine on their favorite meal: the seals that live on the island's rocky coasts. Massive, fast, and perfectly adapted to hunting after 11 million years of evolution, the great whites are among the planet's most fearsome, fascinating, and least understood animals.

In the fall of 2012, Katherine Roy visited the Farallons with the scientists who study the islands' shark population. She witnessed seal attacks, observed sharks being tagged in the wild, and got an up close look at the dramatic Farallons—a wildlife refuge that is strictly off-limits to all but the scientists who work there. Neighborhood Sharks is an intimate portrait of the life cycle, biology, and habitat of the great white shark, based on the latest research and an up-close visit with these amazing animals.

This is an informational non-fiction book about the feeding habits of great white sharks off the coast of California. I recommend this because I think it demystifies the great white shark a bit. It's not some blood-thirsty creature of the deep, but a complex entity. I always believe that the more we know about something, the scarier it is. The more kids know about sharks, they become less scared and may gain an interest. Katherine Roy's illustrations depict it as a machine perfected for its environment. The body is diagrammed as an airplane to highlight its aerodynamic design and the circulatory system is like that of an engine to show how the shark gains it energy. Roy also depicts the waters surrounding the island where the sharks hunt as a soup, showing where sharks are on that food chain and their importance in the ecosystem. I am a huge shark fanatic so I would recommend this book for elementary-age kids who are interested in sharks or may be budding marine biologists. I would warn that some readers may not like the images of a seal getting bitten but other than that I would still recommend.

Just what I expected after reading "How to Be an Elephant". There is lots of blood in the water, because these sharks prey on the seals that congregate at a seal rookery around 30 miles from San Francisco. Some of the diagrams, alas, are a bit confusing, like the shark's circulatory system and the soup bowl. But I'm sure they were clear to the author.

This book was an indulgent post-graduation gift to myself. The employees at the independent bookstore squealed jealously when I went through the checkout line. It's a serious delight and a real appetizer to Shark Week in a mere few months. Ms. Roy is to be commended for merging science, biology, and artistry in this wonderfully informative book.

The story of the great white sharks who come to feed at the Farallon Islands near San Francisco and the scientists who study them is told in a fascinating, informative narrative and in spectacular, dramatic illustrations. An exceptional work of nonfiction.

It seems like most children love ocean animals, especially sharks, Neighborhood Sharks is a great educational book especially for young children eager to learn about great white sharks. This book has plenty of information about the behavior and physiology of great white sharks. The book is presented in a way that keeps the readers engaged. The vivid illustrations are captivating with their own unique style. There are so many pages full of great facts and information, through the text and diagrams. I highly recommend this book for both content and great illustrations.

The genre of this book is informational. This book educates children all about Great White Sharks, the ocean's largest fish. Roy tells of the shark's many deadly features, eating habits, and hunting habits. It woul be a great book to discuss sharks with a classroom.
