ACT1
Scene 1
(In front of the Temple in Jerusalem stands the prophet Jeremiah and his secretary Baruch. Next to them stand the priest and the leader of the guards Pashhur as well as the false prophet Ananias. In front of them the people of Jerusalem.)
BARUCH
People of Jerusalem! People of entire Israel and Judah, listen to the words of Jahwe, God of Israel. The prophet Jeremiah will speak to you!
ANANIAS
Don’t listen to him, he is a false prophet. Prophet Jeremiah is lying and sowing discord in your minds. He is spreading rumours that the Temple shall be destroyed, that Jerusalem shall be destroyed and many other cities destroyed. I assure you, Jerusalem is not to be taken. Go to your homes!
BARUCH
Stay and don’t go away. It’s the prophet Ananias who is leading you astray. He is not a servant of God of Israel. Jahwe is not speaking through his mouth as He is speaking through the mouth of prophet Jeremiah. Prophet Jeremiah is a servant of Jahwe and you should listen to him.
PROPHET JEREMIAH
Jahwe directed to me the following words: I knew you before you came into the world, before I formed you in the womb of your mother. I sanctified you and set you up as a prophet for the people. I said, Lord, Jahwe, I don’t know how to speak, since I am but a youth. Jahwe, however, answered me: don’t tell me I am a youth
, since you will go to whomever I shall send you to, and you will say whatever I shall bid you. Don’t fear them since I am with you to guard you. And reaching out his hand he touched my lips and said: Here, I place my words in your mouth. Look, today I give you power over the nations and the kingdoms, to tear down and to destroy, to bring down and to undo, and to build and to sow.
VOICES FROM THE CROWD
We want you to speak to us - want to hear you - talk to us! We want to know the word of Jahwe, the God of Israel.
Prophet Jeremiah
The word which Jahwe announced to Jeremiah: Listen to the words of this covenant and talk to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. You will tell them: This says Jahwe, the God of Israel: cursed be the man who does not listen to the words of this covenant, which I gave to your ancestors, when I led them out of Egypt, out of the iron smelting furnace, saying: Listen to my voice and follow what I command you. You shall be my people, and I shall be your God, so that I can fulfil the promise I made to your ancestors, that I shall give unto you the land of milk and honey, such as you have today. And I said let it be, Jahwe. And Jahwe said to me: announce all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. Listen to the words of this covenant and fulfil it. Because I strongly urged your ancestors from the day I led them out of the land of Egypt to this day, ceaselessly saying: listen to my voice! They however, listened not and did not bend down their ear. Each acted according to the hardness of their perverted heart. I fulfiled therefore on them all these words which I commanded them to keep, and which they did not guard. And the Jahwe said to me: there is a secret agreement between the men
