Set in English, the 1657 masterpiece of great Icelandic poet Hallgrimur tells the last days of Christ to a set of Moravian hymn-tunes. These majestic songs bring the Easter Saga to life and unify the Christian tradition with a healing message. Founded by brothers Cyrill (creator of Cyrillic) and Methodius in 800 AD, the Moravian (Czech) Church published the first hymnal in Europe. In the 1600s, Hallgrimur combined the Moravian singing-service with the Icelandic Saga rimer tradition to create The Passion-Hymns. During Hallgrimur's era, Moravian Bishop Comenius advocated European unity, freedom of conscience and the benefits of spontaneous order, which appealed to the great poet. 4-part SATB harmony is perfect for soloists, quartet, choir and congregation. Chord symbols are included. Voicings are suggested for the singers playing Hallgrimur along with Christ and the other Biblical characters.
