Surviving Leukemia and Hodgkin's Lymphoma: An Overview Of Effective Treatment Methods
()
About this ebook
Melinda Baxter
Having seen members in her immediate and extended family deal with incurable diseases like Leukemia and Hodgkin's lymphoma, Melinda Baxter wanted to find out more about these specific diseases and possibly be able to suggest some alternate methods of treatment. With that as her main focus and with the encouragement of her mother she started to do her research. Melinda did learn quite a bit but was a bit dismayed with all the books that she had to read to really find out about one disease. This is when she got the idea of creating a book that, though it would be more concise, it would give the reader a better understanding of what the diseases were and how they can be combated.

Surviving Leukemia and Hodgkin's Lymphoma - Melinda Baxter
Chapter 1- What Is Acute Myeloid Leukemia?
Acute Myeloid Leukemia otherwise known as AML or granulocytic or myelogenous leukemia is an aggressive cancer which attacks the non-lymphocyte white blood cells. There are quite a few sub-categories of acute myeloid leukemia. Some of these types are acute promyelocytic leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute monocytic leukemia, erythroleukemia, acute myelomonocytic leukemia, and acute megakaryoblastic leukemia.
With acute myeloid leukemia, cancerous blood cells fail to mature into normal blood elements and spread into the marrow of the bone, replacing the marrow's natural components. The immaturity of these white blood cells makes them impossible to function properly resulting in the patient's inability to effectively prevent infections or even fight them. Consequently, with acute myeloid leukemia, there are decreased numbers of normal red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, leading to symptoms of anemia, infections and consistent bleeding.
Acute myeloid leukemia has been generally observed to exist more commonly in older adults. In the USA, acute myeloid leukemia occurs in less than one per 100,000 people under the age of 30 and in more than 11 per 100,000 people older than 30.
The existence of Acute Myeloid Leukemia or AML is normally quite difficult to diagnose as early warning signs may be similar to the common flu or any other non fatal disease. Some of the more common symptoms of Acute Myeloid Leukemia are; nose bleeds, easy bruising of the skin, fatigue especially after any physical activity, a person being prone to different infections and difficulty of wound healing due to lack of proper function of the white blood cells. It is also good to note that some subtypes of acute myeloid leukemia have some specific symptoms. In some subtypes, leukemic cells spread from the circulating blood into other tissues of the body, for example into the gum where it causes swelling of the gums and substantial discomfort while chewing.
A physician should be immediately consulted should these signs persist: fever, weakness or tiredness, or aches in the bones or joints. If a patient has acute symptoms of myeloid leukemia, a doctor may order blood tests specifically designed to enable him/her to count the number
