    STARS - Jan Stewart, M.Ed.

    Part I

    Introduction

The STARS LifeSkills Program is a series of six counseling workbooks for students in grades five through nine. Each workbook is designed to teach specific life skills using a variety of short, easy to read, concrete activities. The STARS Life-Skills Program may be used as a comprehensive curriculum, as a group counseling resource, or as a workbook for individual students who need to develop specific skills.

The six components of The STARS LifeSkills Program include the following:

    Learning About Anger

    Learning More About Anger

    Knowing Yourself

    Getting Along with Others

    Respecting Others

How Drugs and Alcohol Affect Us

Each workbook includes 32 pages of interactive lessons that teach a variety of life skills using a cognitive-behavioral approach. The assumptions of this approach are that students are active in their own learning and that cognitive mediating events will affect behavior. The intent of The STARS LifeSkills Program is to provide specific interventions to assist students in acquiring new and more productive cognitive and behavioral responses in their future life experiences.

It is explained to the students at the beginning of each workbook that the lessons contained in The STARS LifeSkills Program are just one tool they may use to develop life skills. Completing the workbooks will not immediately change the individual; however, the information in the books will provide some new ideas or options to consider for future interactions with others. While the workbooks were being developed the author continually consulted with adolescents and implemented many of their suggestions; this has resulted in a much more genuine and realistic product. Adolescents will easily relate to the situations and examples used to teach the various concepts.

Counselors have found the STARS LifeSkills workbooks to be a valuable resource
