About this ebook

Where should you start if you are faced with massive systemic challenges or want to cultivate a shift towards sustainability in global systems? Where are the leverage points for systemic change? This book provides examples of what organisations and companies like the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, WWF and Nike are doing, along with practical strategies and an overview of system change theory. Section one outlines systems thinking, especially how we can use a ‘living systems’ perspective as a tool to understanding sustainability and change. Section two pulls out practical strategies for action from theoretical models and 'must-read' literature. Section three illustrates how organisations are implementing these strategies -- including examples from the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, Nike, Sustainable Food Lab, Finance Innovation Lab, Shell Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation. Section four provides tips for you as a practitioner navigating this territory. Many of the ideas behind cultivating system change can be difficult to understand until they are put into practice. This 'practitioner's companion' ends with questions that will prompt reflections and spur you to action. Keep it to hand as you change the system!

Anna Birney

ANNA BIRNEY is Head of Forum for the Future’s System Innovation Lab. Forum works globally with business, government and others to solve complex challenges so as to transform essential systems like food and energy to secure a sustainable future. The Lab is where we experiment and learn how we and others create system change. Anna is passionate about developing and facilitating programmes for individuals, organisations and systems to discover innovative approaches to change. Anna began seeking system change when working on multi-stakeholder processes around the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development and across the education system at WWF-UK. Since joining Forum in 2008 she has worked on business and sector strategies, motivating leaders, and experimenting with approaches to scaling up change. This includes working with the Shell Foundation to maximise the reach and impact of ‘ethical agents’ in retail markets, working to shape the health system with the NHS and Bupa, and being a design and learning partner on other sector based projects including the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, Futurescapes, Community Energy Coalition and The Smart CSOs Lab. Anna provides advice and direction on Golden’s global Ecosystems Labs. She has a Postgraduate Diploma in action research from the University of Bath’s Management school and is completing a doctorate on ‘How might people and organizations, who seek a sustainable future, cultivate systemic change?’ from Lancaster University Management School.
