About this ebook

Appearances can be deceptive. This is a small book with the cosiest of titles – The Parable of the Dog – and you might assume that it isn't deep. Presumably, Jesus' listeners felt the same when he started to tell parables of straying sons, mustard seeds or mugged Samaritans. Be warned! As with the biblical parables, this soothing appearance disguises the sharpest of steel. This is an important, inspiring and relevant parable that addresses a critical issue in today's church.

I would find it hard to think of a more important matter to discuss right now than the Lordship of Christ being outworked in the lives of believers. Christ our Saviour is awesome, but we cannot grow without moving on to own Christ as our Lord. Christ dying for us is our eternal salvation. Us dying for Him will bring that salvation to the world. So much of our preaching, teaching and testifying is about what God can do for us. It’s imperative we lay down our lives for what we can do for Him.

Strangely enough the burden of this message found an illustration in a joyfully light moment in our family when we brought home a new dog. As I related the story of the dog’s training to my friend Canon J. John (who was speaking in our church at the time), he said the message of the story should be called ‘Parable of the Dog’. After sharing this message a number of times I came to feel it really needed to be found on the pages of a book. So here it is, in your hands. Congratulations! I pray this book will help you find your new way of living under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Last year our 12 year old, small white West Highlander dog passed on. Since our children were small we had always had dogs around the house, but in the sadness of losing Aberdeen, we thought we would simply leave it at that and not get another one.

Some time passed, and as Chris and I (empty-nesters) moved into a smaller house, I thought a great Christmas present for her would be a new dog, the same breed as Aberdeen. So we found a West Highlander breeder, a long way out of town, arranged to meet her, where we paid for the eight-week-old ball of
