Introduction: What is Style?
There is a vast gap between fashion and style. Fashion is about clothes and their relationship to the moment. Style is about you and your relationship to yourself. Fashion is in the clothes. Style is in the wearer. The distinction could not be more revealing. Style does not demand a credit card. It prospers on courage and creativity. Style goes way beyond fashion; it is an individual distinctive way of putting ourselves together. It is a unique blend of spirit, substance and personal identity imposed on and created through the world of things. It is a way of capturing something vibrant and making a statement about oneself in clothes. It is what people really want when they aspire to be fashionable that is if they aren't just adorning themselves in status symbols.
How you live and your personal style are just as important to your uniqueness as your skincare and makeup. Through clothes we reinvent ourselves every time we get dressed. Our wardrobe is our visual vocabulary. Style is our distinctive pattern of speech and our individual poetry. Style is for starters one part identity, self-awareness and self-knowledge. You can't have style until you have articulated a self. And style requires security - feeling at home in one's body regardless of size both physically and mentally. Of course like all knowledge, self-knowledge must be updated as you grow and evolve; style takes on-going self-assessment. Style is also another part personality, spirit, verve, wit, has attitude and always carries a twist of inventiveness. It demands the desire and confidence to express whatever mood one wishes. Such variables are not only necessary they are a reflection of a person's unique complexity as a human being. In order to work, style must reflect the real self, the character and personality of the individual; anything less appears to be costume.
Having style presumes that you are a person of interest - that the world is a place of interest and that life is worth making an effort for. True style in addition to being irrevocably social is even morally responsible. Consumption isn't promiscuous or randomly at the whim of the marketplace or the urging of marketers. Rather, it is focused on what is personally suitable and expressive. No one should be penalized for not having style, of course, but those who have it are distinctive and thus more memorable. In the end, style is fundamentally democratic. It assumes every person has the potential to create a unique identity and express it through grooming and a few well-chosen clothes. It sets apart those who have it from those whose dress is merely utilitarian. It announces to the world that the wearer has assumed command of self.
This manual will assist you self examine the real you in detail, it will instruct you how to style yourself correctly to your unique character to reach your maximum potential. It examines a variety of historical styles that still influence our code of styling today. Everyone can learn their individual style; it requires focus, the desire to become the best you can be, a little dedicated time, effort and a passionate determination to uncover your unique identity. The aim of this book is to instil style confidence, it aims to point you in all the right stylish directions, it will encourage you to go out into the world to live your life well enjoying being you looking and feeling great. When you know who and what you are, you can then set about becoming the best you can be, when you look and feel great - nothing in the world beats this - it has a therapeutic quality that trickles down to restores and nurture the deep inner soul.

Style is the total combination of the way you dress, talk, move your body or do anything for that matter. Simply put, it is how we express our inner being outwardly. This includes all of our thoughts, emotions, interests, and values. Everything on the outside is merely a reflection of what is on the inside. Style equals expression and a style of expression is a combination of letting your inner beauty shine and your outer beauty shine too.
In a society increasingly focused upon image, where the single greatest influence on a first impression is someone's physical appearance, does what you choose to wear define who you are? It is certainly true that people make assumptions about you based on what they see. From what you look like, what
