- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5When life gives us lemons, we're supposed to make lemonade. Eddie Cantor (born Edward Israel Iskowitz) got hit with a truckload of lemons when the stock market crashed in 1929.
Lots of other people got hit by that truck, as well. History remembers the folks who didn't even try to find a pitcher to get started on the lemonade. They just took a flying leap out a skyscraper window. I wish history remembered Eddie, instead.
When Eddie wrote this spoof of the calamitous days leading up to the crash, he didn't just make lemonade. He spiked the drink with jokes so people could have a laugh in a difficult time. I'm going to make a place for this cute little book in my Shrine of Happy Reads bookshelf, so I can flip through it whenever tough times come a calling. (Since it's from the original 1929 printing, holding it makes me feel like I'm touching that era.) - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The Crash of 1929 wiped out many actors and comedians, Eddie Cantor being one of them. Cantor managed to get some lemonade out of these lemons with comedic routines on stage, and in print. This (very thin) little book is a compilation of jokes, done in routine form; it's very similar to performances Cantor did on record. There's a definite wince-inducing gag (and illustration) involving Kuhn, Loeb tied to Cantor's blackface persona. As a sample of contemporary reaction to the crash, though, it's valuable.

My throat is cut from ear to ear. I am bleeding profusely in seven other places. There is a knocking in the back of my head, my hands tremble violently, I have sharp shooting pains all over my body, and in addition to all that, my general health is none too good.
One of the greatest diagnosticians in America thumped me and probed me all over the
