The Water Line: A Klansman's Road to Redemption
()
About this ebook
Selma, Alabama (first written in 2015) and set in 2020.
Given The Turmoil in Our Nation Today, This Story is a Must-Read.
Former Klansman and Alabama native David Earl Applewhite’s journey, on the rugged road to redemption, lasts fifty years. It ends in a way no one will see coming, with his atoning confrontation with demons of his own creation. "The Water Line" is a story for our time that shows the destructive effects of hate, and the healing power of love and forgiveness.
From the author: I offer my deepest and sincerest thanks to Ms. Cicely Tyson and Robert Duvall. Your immeasurable talent, body of work, and unique personal attributes served as exacting templates for this story’s principal characters: David Earl Applewhite and Sarah Davis.
Screenplay is complete, and was recognized at The Austin Film Festival not long ago.
Gene Cartwright (author of 12 books and more to be released soon, is a former Oprah guest author and Pulitzer Nominee for his third novel, "A Family Gathering."
Gene Cartwright
The late Award-winning actress, Ms Cicely Tyson read Gene's third novel, 'a Family Gathering', called in 2008, and they spoke for more than two hours. It was an unexpected honor. They shared a friendship and a deep and abiding respect.Ms. Tyson said, of 'A Family Gathering:' - "I have not been so moved by a story since reading Alex's book [Roots]. Words cannot express Gene's reaction. The Author:Gene Cartwright, a native of Texas, often says it was his great fortune to be born at the right address— the home of his parents. His mother who taught him to read when he was barely four. He was fascinated, captured by the freedom reading afforded. Gene read and was inspired to put his own words to paper. He has always enjoyed both technical and literary pursuits. He wrote his first novel at 12. (90 pages longhand.)Gene graduated high school and in less than a month, headed immediately to college at Prairie View A&M. Four years later, and for almost eight years thereafter, during what he now refers to as another life, Gene was an electrical engineer, designing lighting and power distribution systems.Next, Gene founded and owned a very successful consumer electronics company in Houston, Texas. A few years later, he saddled up and headed west.Throughout his engineering pursuits and business activities, he continued to write and dream of being a published and a fulltime author. In 1996, that dream was realized. Gene has written 10 novels, 2 nonfiction, 1—a book of "visual poetry", and several screenplays. Gene's latest book, "The Value of Small Things," is a powerful little book that will help you find reasons for loving your life. He also owns several patents. For two years, his book tour for 'I Never Played Catch With My Father,' took him from coast to coast: He has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including Oprah, NPR stations and countless TV morning shows, news and sports shows. He has been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles. Gene was the featured author in Ebony Magazine in the November '97 issue. Finally, Gene's greatest childhood thrill was his very first little league baseball game. And his pet peeve, something he labels sacrilegious: the use of the aluminum baseball bats.More to come.Gene's Website: https://GeneCartwrightBooks.comBlog: https://gblog.genecartwright.comOther sites:https://GreenLightThis.comhttps://Noteplayer.com

We often ignore the whispers, while waiting for the thunder.
We ignore gentle mist, while anticipating the downpour.

The purpose in writing this book is to offer reasons for hope and to encourage an ‘always-forward’ attitude, no matter the difficulty. More than a half million Americans (it pains me to write this) have been lost to COVID19. Yes, more than 500, 000 have died, and the number grows each day. Tens of thousands become infected each day. Let that sink in. It seems such heart-wrenching statistics have become normal. We dare not simply give a head-shake and move on.
We will get through this, but not by simply wishing and hoping. As we—those who give more than lip service to democracy—move forward with President Biden and Vice-President Harris, as we all act to make real America’s promised ideals, and root out opponents of our democracy, we must renew our determination to heal—in every way. Dedicated and competent leadership built on truth-telling makes a huge difference. America sees that. The world sees that.
Let us all continue to be uplifted and emboldened by the inspired, soul-edifying words of America’s Youth Poet Laureate, Amanda Gorman during the Biden-Harris Inauguration. In the wake of the damnable assault on The Capitol and our democracy, may her captivating presence and her Inaugural Poem, ‘The Hill We Climb’ serve as an eternal light banishing a pervasive darkness.
To say we are living in unprecedented times
is a gross understatement. It seems each sunrise and sunset bring news of some norm-shattering, precedent-shattering, calm-shattering event. Coping either demands withdrawal to some underground cave, or successfully finding inner balance and some semblance of equilibrium, in order to maintain belief in a better next day,
let alone some distant tomorrow.
The new year provides reasons for hope, but we dare not let our guard down.
In the waning seconds of 2019, as millions watched the New Year’s Eve festivities in New York’s Times Square, witnessed the famous Countdown Ball
drop, and listened the recording of Frank Sinatra belting out New York, New York,
no one in the general population could have predicted what would soon follow throughout 2020.
Added to the devastation of the COVID19 pandemic is the pandemic of racism, the threat of domestic terrorism, and violence being suffered by African Americans and other fellow human beings of color. Sadly, many wish to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to this undeniable reality. I cannot. I will not. If this truth offends you, feel free to stop reading.
We Are Realists.
Whomever you are, and depending upon what challenges you face, thinking in what may seem lofty or esoteric terms may seem unrealistic to suggest. However we hope you do reap benefit from The Value of Small Things that is far
