About The Author

My name is David Cohne and I started the Introduction to Investing Series of books. The rapid decline of the traditional pension has left most Americans to fend for themselves when it comes to their investments and retirement planning. Stagnant wages combined with rising prices have put a real burden on Americans to make ends meet. There is a real lack of affordable financial education at a time when personal finance topics are becoming more and more complex. Young people are burdened with student debt while older people are facing retirement with less than adequate savings.  So this book series is an educational tool for Americans to learn about important financial topics.

I have spent over 15 years providing investment research to Financial Writers and Portfolio Managers. I have previously served as Executive Vice President & Managing Director of Research at an investment consulting firm where I oversaw the development and implementation of investment strategy for the firm. I also served as Vice President of a financial publishing firm. I started my career as an Assistant Portfolio Manager at an investment management firm. I received an undergraduate degree in Economics from Brandeis University and an MBA from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. I reside just outside of Boston, Massachusetts.

Getting Started With Investing

The Stock Market

The stock market is an exchange or marketplace where people can buy and sell shares of stock in companies. When you buy a share in a company, you are owning a piece of that company. You want the company to make a lot of money, in the hope that the shares of your stock, will increase in value, and in turn, make you more money. There is a lot of speculation in the stock market. There are investors who buy shares of a company, in the hope that it will perform well in the future. There are also investors who sell shares of a company, when they believe that the company will perform poorly in the future. A company's performance can help determine the value of a stock share, but not the price. The stock price is determined by the market itself. If an investor is willing to pay a certain amount for a stock, then that is what dictates the price.
