The S Cleanse - Dr. LindaJoy Rose

Introduction: We Are On Toxic Overload

Taking a break from your customary eating habits – be it through fasting, consuming only liquids, or radically changing your eating habits over a designated period of time – allows your body to detoxify from the thousands of chemicals and potentially dangerous substances that we are exposed to on a daily basis.

According to the Center for Disease Control, each of us has accumulated over 140 of these toxins in our bodies. These dangerous chemicals and substances have been implicated in the formation of many debilitating medical conditions such as headaches, chronic fatigue, digestive disorders, weight disorders, and allergies, and they have even been linked to life-threatening diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Our bodies have a brilliantly designed built-in detoxification system that helps fight infection and disease by filtering out the endotoxins, which are the waste products given off by the cells every 24 hour period and filtered out by the liver, pancreas, and kidneys.

However, we are living in a time of extreme toxic overload. Through constant exposure to environmental exotoxins – like exhaust fumes, pesticides in our foods, phthalates from plastics in our packaging, caustic chemical cleaning supplies, etc. – our bodies need us to collaborate in the detoxification process so that the immune system remains resistant to disease and counteracts the aging process.

    Factors Contributing to Toxic Overload

Below are additional factors that contribute to toxic overload:

Most of us do not chew our food sufficiently, so it is not broken down properly and creates a further burden on the digestive tract.

Prolonged stress creates toxic by-products, hormonal imbalances, and an acidic environment. Stress can even impair the functioning of the intestines, as in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Much of what is available to us as food has been over-processed and contains many chemicals and by-products that are not recognizable to the body, causing an accelerated immune response and mucus formation.

Difficult to digest and toxic by-products in foods created by frying, high-heat baking or grilling, such as acrylamides and AGEs (Advanced Glyco-Oxidation End Products).

Prescribed and over-the-counter medications that leave toxic residues.

Our mainstream food supply relies on excessive amounts of sugar and sodium to appeal to consumers. When consumed at high levels, both of these substances have deleterious effects on bodily functions and vital organs.

Many fundamental nutrients are missing from the soil and have been replaced by pesticide or lab-produced chemicals unrecognizable to the body.

Allergies and sensitivities are endemic as much of our food supply has been hybridized, modified, or exposed to harmful molds.

Endemic toxicity and faulty digestion block the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients from our foods.

Over-exposure to toxicity causes chronic inflammation.

    The Dangers of Chronic Inflammation

Most of us are already experiencing chronic inflammation in the digestive tract, a disorder that makes it hard for the body to absorb the vital nutrients our bodies need to maintain healthy functions. This condition exacerbates as problem foods or non-food particles are attacked by the white blood cells of the immune system as invaders or threats to the body. According to Dr. Alexander Junger, Toxins that cannot be eliminated in a timely manner remain in circulation, causing irritation and damage…Inflammation starts as a survival mechanism, but can turn fatal when it goes on for a prolonged period.

Acute inflammation is a factor in degenerative diseases and can accelerate the aging process by affecting the viability of the mitochondria. Mitochondrial dysfunction may trigger the release of free radicals to roam the body, damaging cellular structures, and potentially allowing for uncontrolled cell growth – the forerunner of cancer.

    The Antidote

You can stop the decline and turn a lot of this around by collaborating with your body’s detoxification process. You accomplish this by giving your body a break from what you usually consume. By following a cleansing regimen for as little as 4 days, your body has a chance to reset and regenerate.

Ritual purification through fasting or a strict dietary regimen was a protocol for thousands of years in the Egyptian and Indian mystery schools, as a prerequisite to receive initiation. In modern times, fasting days are part of many religious traditions along with days or weeks of giving up certain foods or eating only at proscribed times. The ancients understood that as toxins build up in the physical body, the emotional and spiritual well-being of an individual becomes compromised, limiting one’s ability to function holistically.

There is a wide spectrum of approaches to detoxification – from radical fasting mode (denying any food intake other than water) to the newer protocols that focus more on a shift in eating, allowing for moderate calorie reduction and ingesting nutrient-dense, unprocessed and high energy plants, fruits and nuts, as opposed to starving yourself or experiencing deep deprivation. We will examine the most popular approaches in the next chapter as well as introducing you to my own method, developed from my experiences over 7 years of doing periodic cleanses – the S Cleanse.

Why Detox? The Science and Body Benefits

Why should you detox? Your body functions best when it periodically cleanses (detoxes) itself of accumulated toxins and free radicals that lead to inflammation, body aches, impairment and disease, and contribute to the aging process.

However, for some people, detox is synonymous with deprivation, hunger, and weird recipes that seem worse than the toxins themselves – but it doesn’t have to be that way! With the right program, the benefits of detox easily outweigh the cons. Below you’ll find my favorite five science-supported reasons for completing a detox.

A detox resets your eating habits for the better.

Everybody experiences periods of unhealthy or emotional eating, but when they last for weeks or spiral into a lifestyle, it can take a planned, coordinated attack to return to healthy eating. When you’re mentally and physically exhausted, it’s just easier to follow a step-by-step playbook that nonetheless allows you the flexibility to adjust to your needs.

Researchers have described five stages of change that lead to healthy eating: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance (Glanz et al. 1994). People in the action and maintenance stages eat less fatty calories, more fruits and veggies, and more fiber. If you are considering a detox, you’re probably in one of the first three stages. Actually committing to a detox program helps you move into preparation and action by giving you the tools and support you need to jump into healthy eating, which can ultimately propel you into the maintenance stage, which should be your goal.

With defined start and end dates and well-structured shopping lists and meal planners, a quality detox program works with you to make it simple to reset your system. Research supports that specific plans, which they term implementation intentions, do make those with unhealthy habits eat healthier (Verplanken & Faes 1999).

Detoxing pumps up your health with plant power.

Research shows that consuming processed foods is associated with bigger BMIs, larger waist sizes, unhealthier cholesterol levels, higher levels of inflammation markers, and greater risk of metabolic syndrome (Tavares et al. 2012; Lipsky et al. 2014). In fact, by looking at developing countries in nutrition transition from crops to processed foods, researchers learned that just a 10% increase in a household’s processed food consumption correlates with a 4% increase in BMI (Asfaw 2009)! Conversely, higher intake of fruits and veggies slashes your risk for obesity, cardiovascular disease, and a whole host of other nasty illnesses (Wang et al. 2011; Liu 2013).

One research team phrased it like this (Wang et al. 2011): [The] health benefits of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other plant foods are attributed to the synergy or interactions of bioactive compounds and other nutrients in whole foods. Therefore, consumers should obtain their nutrients, antioxidants, bioactive compounds, and phytochemicals from a balanced diet with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other plant foods for optimal nutrition, health, and well-being, not from dietary supplements.

On the S Cleanse, you’ll consume fresh and delicious plant-based creations that sample from some of the main plant categories – fruits and vegetables – which according to one paper, possess different bioactive compounds with various antioxidant capacities that together produce synergistic antioxidant interactions to amp up your cardiovascular health (Liu 2013). Unlike other detox programs, it doesn’t rely on proprietary supplements that science just doesn’t support. Your dishes come straight from farm to fork with minimal processing in between, ensuring you get all the unfiltered, raw nutrients, antioxidants, bioactive compounds, and phytochemicals that plants pack.

Moderate calorie restriction ups your lifespan.

Study after study has concluded that calorie restriction fights obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer risk – even when only implemented over short periods (Dolinsky & Dyck 2011)! In fact, one scientific article called it the most effective nutritional intervention for slowing aging and preventing chronic disease (Omodei et al. 2011). However, extreme calorie restriction leads to malnutrition and adverse clinical effects, which is why deprivation-focused detox programs should be avoided (Fontana & Klein 2007).
