About the Author
The Dragonlands
Well before the Era of Sages, a darkness covered the Seven Lands. The different peoples huddled together, merely surviving. Magical beasts roamed freely through the portals that scattered the lands. None of the magical beasts were more revered or more feared than Dragons.
Great Dragon Warriors fought the darkness. After countless battles, they eventually defeated it, but not destroyed it. They imprisoned the darkness in an inaccessible corner of the world to remain there for all eternity. The Dragons ushered the world into a new era.
During the time known as Dragora, the Dragons carved the Seven Lands into thirteen districts—one district for each Dragon clan. Under the direction of the clan’s leader, the First Dragon, a clan managed its district like a simple steward. They cared not for the affairs of man nor beast. Dragons only ever had one concern: Dragons.
The largest district belonged to the most powerful clan—the Clan of Cian. Cian’s First Dragon, Angana, chose the area for its sweeping mountains, lush forests, and bountiful hunting. Nothing pleased Angana more than to survey her district. She flew from boundary to boundary, hunting and resting wherever she favored.
Unlike other Dragons, Angana often chose to hunt during the day. Her silvery body reflected and refracted light, rendering her practically invisible. The browns and greens of the other Dragons in the clan allowed them to blend with the forest and camouflage with the night sky. At night, her potbelly shone like a silver moon. Only she, out of all the Dragons in the world, bore a silver hue.
Once a year, the Dragons of Cian would leave their cozy, solitary homes in high mountain caves to compete in the Dragon Games. Never participating, Angana oversaw every event. The fire breathing contests challenged Dragons to shoot fire hotter, farther, and for longer durations. They flew through agility courses, in formation, and for speed. Hunting for the largest and smallest prey brought oohs
and ahhs
while the softest landing contest always provided a chuckle.
On the last day of the games, the Dragons feasted on the shores of Great Silver Lake. With full potbellies, they slept on the sand under a blanket of stars. Angana glowed in the center of the muddle of greens and browns. Awake, she stared at the twinkling sky. The
