About this ebook

KERRY

After David’s betrayal, the last thing I wanted to do was stay in Kansas. So I traded in my cheating husband for a one-way ticket to the land of gondolas, cobbled streets and…. sexy daring Italian men kissing me in doorways? Just one…one in particular…

LUCA

I’m used to it. Fast cars, glitzy galas and a few knockout supermodels on each arm. But it’s time for me to put all that aside. What I’m not used to is the bronze beauty I caught resting in the sunlight. There’s something about the way she clings to me when I save her that makes me never want to let her go….

Nowhere in the world is there a place like Venice. The narrow streets and dark canals twist around each other in an intricate knot. The buildings seem to compete with each other to see who can be more spectacular and a short walk can take you across centuries. The flags in St. Mark’s square are waving to me and tourists are rushing by, trying to take in as much of the city as they can before they have to go home to their drab and ordinary lives. I can hear the bells ringing and as people stroll down the cobbled streets, it’s like background music for their lives.

Every corner that a person turns here leads to a new discovery. There are floating churches surrounded on all sides with water, grand hotels, shops with priceless art and exotic masks and much, much more. I sighed deeply as I sat on the veranda of the quaint little restaurant and breathed in the crisp air. As I looked around at the magnificent city I joked to myself... We sure aren’t in Kansas anymore, Toto. I smiled and thought about what a monumental decision it had been to just pick up and leave my life. I quit my teaching job and filed for divorce...and so far, I have no regrets. It takes a lot of guts to start over...or maybe it’s a mental disorder, I’m not sure which yet.

David is the reason that I’m here. My mind drifted back to when he admitted he was seeing Cynthia the art teacher. Seeing, he said, Not fucking" as he should have said. I wouldn’t mince words if I hadn’t walked in on them together at my home. The word was definitely fucking. It was made worse by the fact that I’d confided in her that David and I were having problems not long before that. What a bitch. I had to laugh about it now. They looked ridiculous and I’m sure I did too with my jaw hanging open. I was shocked and I was angry...but within a day or two those emotions began to morph into relief. I was relieved that I could finally leave and I didn’t have to feel guilty about it at all.

The most surprising emotion wasn’t the shock or anger that followed however. It was the relief.  Finally I can leave. I’m not sure if I should feel guilty about that...I was looking for an excuse, something to make it easier. I walked in and saw my husband’s naked ass and I had it.

Back in Venice, I let my head drop back now and I closed my eyes. The sun felt good on my face and the air smelled...free.

Excuse me Miss? I opened my eyes to see the waiter hovering over me. I smiled, embarrassed to be caught indulging in the sun.  Will that be all for you?

Yes thank you, I told him, handing him the little leather book back with the tip I’d left for him.

Thank you, he said, Have a great day.

You too. I plan on it. I plan on having a great life. I casually let my eyes skim the restaurant, peeking to see if anyone had seen me indulging. I spotted a business man at a nearby table watching me. He had one of those faces that would make an atheist believe in God... Full lips and a strong jawline framed the most piercing blue eyes I’d ever seen. His eyes danced with amusement as he looked me up and down. I felt my face heat up as he held me captive in his gaze. His dark hair was silky and I clenched my hands as they itched to touch him there. I’m not interested in going there or anywhere right now...but damn if he isn’t nice to look at. He’s the definition of eye candy. The room stilled and I suddenly realized I was staring back at him. I felt my entire body grow hotter and I quickly rose and gathered my things to go.

I walked out without looking back at the Adonis and made my way across the cobblestone square. Piazza San Marco is my new favorite place. I’m overwhelmed by the beauty of the Basilica, the Campanile and the uniqueness of the square itself. But, walking through Merceria Orologio right before you enter St. Mark’s square is the best. Something about knowing the clock tower has survived since the 1400’s gave me hope for surviving my own situation.  If you look up and above the gate you’ll see the round white marble 24 hour clock with the image of a gold sun that points at the hour of the day. There is a gold pointer that shows the position of the sun in the zodiac, and the blue inner circle shows the earth in the center and the moon on a separate circle that shows its position to the earth. Then there are the gold stars that are fixed and never change. It something stable in an ever changing world. It brings me peace for some reason.

As I walked today I was looking up at the statue of the Virgin and child and I admit, not paying a lot of attention to where I was going. That might be why I didn’t see the car coming towards me until it popped over the shallow curb. I
