If you ask most people they will tell you there are two classes of people, the rich and the poor. In the rich persons eyes there is no such thing as middle class or upper middle class, because they believe if you are not rich you are poor. In my travels through life I have found out that there is a third class. They may be rich, or rarely not. They are normally very well educated. They have rarely worked for a long period of time for anyone. They are sought after not for their knowledge or skill in any particular area; they are sought after quite simply for who they know. This is the case with André and Rania. Sergei has a unique skill which is needed by some people to stay in power or to get a competitive edge. This is their story.
ANDRÉ
Ralph and Edna met when they were both attending Georgetown University. Ralph was an English Major and Edna was getting her Liberal Arts degree. They were both intelligent and were on full scholarships. They fell in love soon after meeting and were married during their senior year. Ralph knew he was born to be a novelist. Edna applied for different opportunities with the U.S. Government and after several offers accepted a low level position with the State Department. Ralph concentrated on his writing. Edna did not mind this arrangement as she knew Ralph had talent and she was oh so in love.
During their third year of marriage Edna became pregnant and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Edna was a Francophile and insisted that the boy be named André.
Ralph was a good father. André did take away from the time he could spend on his writing. He did not mind. Edna was happy with this arrangement, as it allowed her to pursue her career at the State Department.
When André was six years old Edna was offered the Consulate position in Nairobi. She accepted it immediately, and with Ralph and André in tow off they went.
André was enrolled in the first grade at the International School of Kenya. Being a child André did not realize that he not only was receiving the best education money could buy, but he was also in school with the children of the local elite as well as the sons and daughters of diplomats from around the world.
After they had been in Nairobi for a few months, one evening in the middle of dinner Ralph jumped up from the table, went into the spare bedroom he used as his writer’s sanctuary and came back with a stack of papers, threw them in the trash and announced that the novel he had been working on all these years was a piece of crap. Ralph felt that all his other responsibilities were getting in the way of his writing. Edna did not say anything but she was having trouble figuring out what the other responsibilities were. This outburst was followed by two weeks of Ralph drinking more than usual. This was then followed by Ralph announcing that he had a new novel in mind and had already started on the outline. Everything was back to normal. This scenario would be repeated many times over the course of their life together.
Edna’s position required quite a lot of socializing. In this arena Ralph was a real asset. He was able to talk to anyone about anything. People were always intrigued with his writing and after knowing Ralph for a few months they were also kind enough to not ask about it.
After a few years of performing her duties as the Consulate in Nairobi, Edna was promoted to the
