About this ebook

This book takes an informal and in-depth look at the five steps of the ADDIE model - Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation – as used in library training programmes. With hints and tips and practical advice from other trainers, the aims of the book are to (1) make the training of library patrons a simple task and (2) to show library staff that training can be rewarding and extremely satisfying. Anyone who has had to design a library training programme will know that it can be quite a daunting task without guidelines, but when it comes to the various learning theories and the associated instructional design models, the choice can be overwhelming. This book will help the reader overcome these problems.
  • Looks at training within the library context
  • Includes surveys to ascertain learning styles

Temasek Polytechnic Library (Singapore) reference librarian Debby Wegener, in "Training Library Patrons the ADDIE Way," takes the popular training/instructional design model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation) widely promoted and used by those of us active in ASTD (the American Society for Training & Development) and, as promised in the title, applies it to staff involved in helping library users learn how to use library resources. Although the book focuses more on assisting students in schools, colleges, and universities than on general public library learners--including adults--the principles, examples, and resources can easily be adapted and applied by those working in public libraries. The emphasis here is on traditional rather than innovative examples of library instruction--teaching learners how to find books, use databases, and use library catalogs rather than exploring contemporary library users' other needs such as improving their job-seeking skills, effectively using the social learning resources which are increasingly important to library users, and acquiring tech skills. The result is a book that will be useful to those in need of a basic introduction to library instruction, including summaries of standard learning theories, presentation skills, and instructional design methods. Those who already have experience in training-teaching-learning may be better served by sources ranging from Wikipedia's article on ADDIE to numerous ASTD publications, including the "ASTD Handbook for Workplace Learning Professionals," which explore various applications for ADDIE.
