      Eclipse!

      An Eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon that involves the Sun, Moon, and Earth. It’s easy enough to recognize an Eclipse when one occurs; either the Moon blocks the light of the Sun from reaching Earth, or the Earth blocks the light of the Sun from reaching the Moon. When the Moon blocks the light of the Sun from reaching Earth, we call the phenomenon a Solar Eclipse. When the Earth blocks the light of the Sun from reaching the Moon, we call it a Lunar Eclipse.

      The study of Eclipses goes as far back as the dawn of human experience. Imagine the fear felt by ancient men and women when the Sun suddenly disappeared in the middle of the day. They did not know that it would come back! They feared the end of the world, everlasting night, imminent death. Since the phenomenon was not something that occurred often, and life expectancy in those times was short, many observers may never have experienced it before, so they had no assurance they would survive.

      So what does an Eclipse mean to us today? What does it mean to those of us living in our modern worlds where we no longer fear the phenomenon, ECLIPSE!, but look forward to it? Does what the ancient astrologers of old believed about the energy of an Eclipse still affect us? Are we now immune to the effect, protected by our homes, our electrical and electronic shields, our fuel-powered vehicles and machines, our civilized industrial environment, our destructive might? Or are we just as affected as our ancestors were in our individual humanity?
